Charles Schwab Challenge Course: Colonial Country Club
The 2025 Charles Schwab Challenge returns to Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, one of the most historic and respected venues on the PGA Tour.
Known as “Hogan’s Alley” in honor of Ben Hogan, the five-time winner here, Colonial is a par-70 layout playing 7,289 yards, and it rewards precision, strategy, and ball control over raw power.
The course’s signature stretch—the “Horrible Horseshoe” (holes 3, 4, and 5)—features a brutal combination of long par-4s and a demanding par-3 that can make or break a player’s round.
Recent renovations by Gil Hanse have modernized the course while staying true to its classic feel, preserving the narrow, tree-lined fairways and small Bentgrass greens that demand creative shot-making and elite approach play.
Players who excel in scrambling and mid-iron control tend to thrive here. With favorable weather expected, the course should play firm and fast, placing even more emphasis on finding the right angles and avoiding costly mistakes.
The Charles Schwab Challenge remains a true test of traditional golf, where brains beat brawn and course management is everything.
Charles Schwab Challenge Marquee Holes
1st Hole 585 Yard Par 5
I love starting off with a Par 5 to give guys a chance to grab a birdie right at the start of the round. The fairway doglegs to the right and it has fairway bunkers on the left so accuracy is important, but guys won’t have problems fading it a bit to the right off the tee.
The green has 4 bunkers surrounding it, but none are that difficult to get up and down from so guys will be happy to go for it in 2 shots even if the bunkers gobble up the ball.
Guys will have to be aggressive from the beginning as Par isn’t a great score on this hole, I think this is a great way to start the round.
18th Hole Rating 5.9
I like this Par 4 as a closing hole even though it’s not too difficult. The fairway is narrow and it bends to the left, but guys are going to bomb it left over the trees to hit the fairway, but anything pulled to the left is going to create a troublesome second shot.
The green has bunkers all around it with water on the left so there are some tricky parts to this hole. It’s not super dramatic, but wayward tee shots to the left will bring bogey or worse into play.
Charles Schwab Challenge: Players That Can Trip You Up
Jordan Spieth
He missed the cut last week, and the last 2 years he’s finished 37th and MC here. He had a string of good finishes, but he’s fallen off the last couple weeks, and in a short field, he’s priced as a Top 5 guys, and I don’t see it. He’s a stay away for me this week.
Tommy Fleetwood
When do we ever feel confident with playing Fleetwood as a Top 2 priced golfer? The answer is never. We have to go back to 2022 to find the last time he finished 2nd, and even though it’s not a great field, it has good enough golfers to have some surprises at the top of the leaderboard.
I can’t poke holes in his game, his number in all categories are good, but he just can never put it together to contend for the win. He’s too expensive this week, I’ll stay away.
Hideki Matsuyama
It hasn’t been a great year for Matsuyama after he won The Sentry as he hasn’t cracked the Top 10 since then, and he has 3 missed cuts in the last 5 tournaments.
His numbers are good, just like Fleetwood’s, but when he’s priced as a Top 5 player I just can’t invest in him when he hasn’t shows us Top 10 upside all season.
Charles Schwab Challenge: DraftKings Darlings
Brian Campbell $6400
His biggest weakness is his lack of length off the tee, but I don’t see that as a big issues at this 7200 yard course.
His approach numbers and putting numbers are incredible the last 30 days, and he’s made the cut in 4 out of 5 tournaments. If he makes the cut again, he’ll give us big returns.
Kevin Roy $6600
He’s made the cut 4 straight tourneys, and at this price, that’s good enough for me. This course isn’t that difficult, and it’s a weak field so someone that’s making the cut 4 times in a row at this price is worth it. His approaches are the concern, but his putting has been good enough to make up for it.
Sam Ryder $6800
He missed the first cut of the season, and then the next week he finished 13th so I’m back on the Sam Ryder wagon.
Only 1 missed cut this season, he’s been the best draftkings darling of the season by far, and it’s been his hot putter that’s made the difference as he’s +0.75 strokes gained putting.
Full Lineup: Brian Campbell $6400, Kevin Roy $6600, Sam Ryder $6800, Ryan Gerard $7900, Davis Riley $8600, Scottie Scheffler $13700
