Significant fundamental advantages here for James Madison which still has an outside shot at a CFP Playoff bid. James Madison rush offense which is heavily predicated on running between the tackles has a nice matchup vs. Troy which ranks 101st in rushing yards allowed per game at 180.6. JMU #1 RB Wayne Knight (1,051 ry on 6.2 ypc) leads the way while QB Alonza Barnett adds an extra dimension to the ground attack ranking #9 in rushing yards among FBS QB’s. Compounding the Trojans problems here is their subpar tackling which has them ranked #112 in that category by analytics group Pro Football Focus. James Madison also well equipped in the passing game with Barnett throwing 46 TD’s the past 2 seasons. Troy main offensive asset is their passing game led by QB Goose Crowder but they’re facing one of the stingiest pass defenses in the country. JMU is #4 in the nation in completion% allowed (51.5%) / #1 in forced incompletions (tied with Notre Dame) & #26 in sack%. Their pass coverage overall is ranked #1 along with Texas Tech. Conference USA Championship Game on CBS Sports Network, kicking off at 4pm PT Friday afternoon. Backing the Kennesaw State Owls over the Jacksonville State Gamecocks.
These two teams played a couple weeks ago and Jacksonville came out on top (35-26). Although, they gave up over 500 yards of offense to Kennesaw St. The reason Jax St won was they were (+3) in the turnover battle. Tough to count on that advantage again for JSU.

James Madison has had an impressive season while dominating conference competition and their only loss of the season coming to Louisville by a 14-point margin. The James Madison offense matches up well against the defense from Troy who cannot stop the run while giving up 4.5 YPC and 171 yards per game on the ground. James Madison is a top running offense who runs for 5.4 yards per carry and 239 yards per game while being led by Wayne Knight who has rushed for 1,051 yards on a 6.2 average and is helped out by quarterback, Alonza Barnett III, who has a 4.5 average on 103 carries. James Madison is rarely forced to throw the ball with how well they operate their run game, but they can stretch the field with their receivers, Landon Ellis and Nick DeGennaro, who have impressive averages of 16.6 and 18.4 on 32 and 21 catches this season. Landon has missed 2 consecutive games with an ankle injury but there were thoughts that he could play last week, but sat out as a precaution, so I am expecting him to play.
Troy is led at quarterback by Goose Crowder who has missed part of the season after injuring his shoulder which required surgery but has made it back to the field and has a solid game last week while completing 24 of 34 passes with 3 touchdowns and an interception. Tae Meadows leads the rushing attack for Troy with a solid 4.5 YPC average but he has had numerous games this season where he was shut down by defenses that are not as strong as the James Madison run defense. The Dukes defense has allowed just 84.7 yards per game on a 2.7 average on the ground and I think that continues in this matchup. While Goose Crowder has come back to the field and played in the previous 3 games, we are still talking about a quarterback who had to have shoulder surgery during the season and will face a stout James Madison defense within the pass game as well. Crowder does have a couple playmaking receivers to spread the ball to in RaRa Thomas and Tray Taylor, but they will face off against 3 of the better cornerbacks within the Sun Belt conference in DJ Barksdale, KJ Flowe, and Justin Eaglin who have limited opposing receivers all season and I expect them to continue that today.
I think James Madison is far superior on both sides of the football and match up well against this Troy team, so I am going to lay the big number with James Madison.

There is a path for JMU to make the College Football Playoff. It involves Duke beating Virginia in the ACC Championship Game. But first, the Dukes must obviously handle business in their own conference title game against Sun Belt rival Troy. Believe it or not, since 2005, there have actually been six other teams to close -23 or higher on Conference Championship Weekend.
Those teams went 5-1 ATS. Furthermore, as I mentioned Thursday on “The Blitz," the last 29 Conference Championship Games have all seen the SU winner also cover the spread. That includes seven double digit favorites. However, rather than lay this massive number (which has already been bet up), I think there's a better way to play James Madison Friday night.
This is an offense that has scored 52+ points four of the last six games. They are facing a Troy defense that is allowing 5.8 yards per play to conference opponents. Style points matter here and I don't see JMU taking their foot off the gas until they've put up a point total sufficient enough to impress the CFP committee. Let's not worry about how many points Troy scores here. JMU Team Total Over.

The Red Raiders have the best roster that money can buy. Rumors have it that they rank 2nd to Texas in NIL spending for this season. They have certainly got their money's worth, ranking #1 in the BIG12 in scoring defense allowing 11 points per game, #1 in total defense allowing 259 yards per game. They have a record of 11-1, and the only loss came on the road at last year's BIG12 champions Arizona State. The Red Raiders had their backup QB under center in that game.
