Matchup: Chiba Lotte Marines at Seibu Lions
Seibu starter: Kaima Taira, who is confirmed to start July 14 at Belluna Dome.

1. Taira has been the most dominant starter in NPB

Taira’s 2026 season numbers:

• 0.99 ERA

• 0.91 WHIP

• Opponents batting .152

• Only one home run allowed

• 78 strikeouts in 82 innings

• Nine earned runs in 13 starts

He has allowed one earned run or fewer in 11 of his 13 starts.

2. Excellent direct record against Lotte

In three 2026 starts against the Marines:

• 17 innings

• Two runs

• 1.06 ERA

• 1.06 WHIP

• Lotte batting .194

• Zero home runs allowed

That equates to only 0.59 runs per five innings.

3. He already completely shut out Lotte

On March 29, Taira threw his first professional complete-game shutout:

• Nine innings

• Zero runs

• Five hits

• Five strikeouts

Lotte therefore finished the first five innings with zero runs.

His April 12 start against Lotte was also seven scoreless innings, meaning Lotte’s first-five team total under 1.5 cashed comfortably in both of his normal-length starts against them.

4. Taira has been even better at home

At Belluna Dome this season:

His overall home ERA is 0.35 across 26 innings.

5. Very low extra-base damage

Taira has allowed only one home run in 319 batters faced this season. A team total of 1.5 is most vulnerable to one swing producing two runs, but Taira has almost entirely removed that route.

6. Lotte must score twice against Taira—not Seibu’s bullpen

This is particularly important because Taira routinely works through at least five innings:

Matchup breakdown

Starting pitchers

Adrián De Horta’s 6.18 season ERA is concerning, but it slightly overstates his current level. In his most recent start against Monclova, he allowed only two runs over six innings with five strikeouts. That suggests he can keep Dos Laredos competitive early, although Tijuana presents a substantially deeper lineup.

I project De Horta for approximately:

• 5 innings

• 4 earned runs

• 7–9 hits

• 1–2 walks

David Reyes has the better season profile at 4.22, although that is not dominant in the high-scoring Mexican League environment. Dos Laredos recently scored 19 runs across three games against Durango, but its offense previously produced only three runs during a three-game sweep by Monclova.

I project Reyes for approximately:

• 5⅔ innings

• 2–3 earned runs

• 6–7 hits

• 4–6 strikeouts

Batting comparison

Tijuana owns a .787 team OPS and combines competent on-base production with power from hitters such as Franchy Cordero, Wilmer Flores and Hernán Pérez. The Toros are not necessarily the league’s most explosive offense, but their lineup is deeper and less dependent on two or three hitters.

Dos Laredos has shown better offensive life recently:

• 4 runs in a 9–4 loss

• 10 runs in a 10–3 win

• 5 runs in an 8–5 loss

However, that came immediately after scoring only three total runs in three games against Monclova. The Tecos’ recent production therefore looks highly opponent-dependent rather than representing a clear offensive breakout.

Bullpen comparison

This is where the matchup should separate.

Dos Laredos’ bullpen has undergone roster changes and recently struggled in important situations. It surrendered four runs in the seventh inning of the 8–5 loss to Durango and three ninth-inning runs in the 5–1 loss to Monclova.

Tijuana has the much stronger relief structure, led by:

• Brett de Geus: 1.37 ERA

• Roel Ramírez: 1.75 ERA

That makes a Dos Laredos comeback less likely once Reyes leaves the game.

Tijuana is the substantially more likely winner because it has the better starter, deeper lineup, elite overall record and a significant bullpen advantage. Takahashi’s two 2026 starts against the Dragons:

Chunichi has therefore scored zero runs in 18 innings against him this season.

Takahashi’s overall 2026 numbers are also elite:

• 1.57 ERA

• 0.77 WHIP

• 92 strikeouts against only 11 walks

• Just three home runs allowed in 97⅓ innings

• Five complete games and four shutouts

He has allowed only 17 earned runs all season.

2. Takahashi’s previous first-five results against Chunichi

The first-five totals in Takahashi’s two 2026 starts against the Dragons were:

• April 12: Hanshin 3–0, exactly three total runs

• May 6: 0–0, zero total runs

Both finished under 3.5. Takahashi has personally prevented Chunichi from contributing anything to those totals.

3. Vantelin Dome favors run prevention

Games at Vantelin Dome have averaged approximately 6.83 total runs in 2026, below the listed all-stadium average of 7.10. Chunichi is batting only .219 at home, with a 3.03 team ERA at the venue.

The indoor conditions also eliminate wind and weather variability.

4. Chunichi’s lineup is the ideal side to oppose

Through July 12, Chunichi ranked last in the Central League at 3.30 runs per game, compared with Hanshin’s 3.86. Chunichi also had a modest .228 team batting average.
