THE PLAY: Mark Janikowski Shots On Goal Over +1.5 (105)
Mark Janikowski started the season slowly, going under this number in his first three games. But when you look closer, he had only two total shot attempts across those three games. The offensive involvement simply wasn't there early in the season, but that has completely changed over his last four games.
Janikowski has recorded 3, 3, 5 and 6 shot attempts in his last four games, clearing this shots-on-goal total in all four. That's exactly the kind of improvement I want to see. He's becoming much more aggressive offensively, and the opportunities to put pucks on net have increased significantly.
The matchup against Washington is another reason I like this play. The Capitals are allowing over 28 shots on goal per game, so this isn't a defense that's consistently shutting down opposing shooters. Carolina is also playing at home, and both teams come into this matchup rested, which should help keep the pace and offensive intensity high.
I also like that Janikowski is getting time on Carolina's second power-play unit. That gives him additional opportunities to generate shots beyond his regular even-strength shifts. When we're only looking for two shots on goal, those extra offensive opportunities can make a big difference.
We're getting a player whose shot volume has increased dramatically, who has cleared this number in four straight games, and who gets a favorable matchup against a Washington team allowing plenty of shots. I like Janikowski to keep the streak going at home.
