What are daily fantasy sports?
If you don’t have time to follow fantasy sports for an entire season, you can try the daily version instead. Daily fantasy sports - often shortened to DFS for convenience - run across a single day or sometimes a week, so it’s far easier to keep your eye on the ball and put together a lineup to compare to what’s happening on the real-life pitch or field. You’ll find two different versions to try, so I'll break those down for you here to make it easier to understand.

At this stage in the game, you should know there are multiple well-established DFS sites you can check out. You might already have spotted the DraftKings fantasy review here, for example. I’ll cover my top picks shortly. First, though, you should know what you can do in your US state.
Which states allow daily fantasy sites?
It’s probably easier for me to begin by revealing which US states don’t allow any form of daily fantasy action just now. They’re all wedged together in the top left corner of the US map if you want to check that out. They are:
- Washington
- Montana
- Idaho
- Nevada
If you live in one of those states, daily fantasy action is currently out of bounds. That still leaves 46 other states though. I found that some states allow both types, while others only allow the traditional format. Check out my handy table to get a feel for the current situation.

I’ve found that a few states are considering moving the goalposts on DFS action, especially concerning Pick ‘Em contests. For example, Arizona, Kansas, and New York are currently a little murky on this count. My advice is this - whether you’re in the Sunshine State, the Silver State, or the Granite State, or anywhere else in the US, check the state of play for daily fantasy sports where you live before you start. In practice, it’s usually easy - visit your favored site and they’ll either block you from accessing it, let you through the doors, or ask you to confirm where you live before you start. Furthermore, if you get underway and the law changes where you live, you’ll certainly hear about it if a site withdraws from your state.
Salary Cap vs. Pick'em: Tactical shifts in June 2026
Most DFS players make the mistake of using the exact same playbook for every format. But in June 2026, you have to play differently. Salary Cap games demand heavy statistical grinding, whereas Pick'em setups are really just about nailing individual efficiency metrics.
You’ve got to know this difference if you want your bankroll to survive. If you try to stack your Salary Cap lineup with nothing but "star" athletes, the budget cap will force you into picking dead weight. The pros have stopped chasing raw points; they now hunt for "points-per-dollar" efficiency.
