UAB football Preview 2023: UAB Picks for Betting

Bill Clark for President!  He was the best coach since Bill Snyder at taking a team from ground zero, making them near elite for their level. 

UAB’s story has been well documented (program deleted for two full seasons).  Sadly, Clark’s spinal issues had him step down in August 2022.  UAB, despite the talented roster, fell to 6-6 (UNDER was a top tier play), plus a bowl win.  The interim coach was not retained, and in comes Trent Dilfer.  Let’s try to pick this one apart..

UAB Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH

Only six or seven starters return, so that’s challenge #1.  QB Zeno saw a decent amount of action last year but he’s a downgrade from Hopkins (transferred). 

Likewise, RB Brown looks like a good player (5.7), but must replace Dewayne McBride, who ran for over 1,700 yards, at 7.4 per carry (19 TD’s).  The OL has been shredded, and the general rule is when that happens, team performance drops. 

Eight of the top ten tacklers (including the top four) are gone.  The secondary may have been the hardest hit area.  While I have no real idea where to set the 2023 numbers, I’m using 4.4-5.4, and 60% as the opening base.  These numbers are not usually associated with winning teams.

UAB 2023 Predictions, UAB Schedule:

UAB opens facing 7-4 NC A&T and then gets an immediate bye week, which might be a blessing.  If they win hosting ULL and USF, the record can reach 3-3. 

Another home game before bye week #2 is vs. Memphis.  I’m not a big fan of Memphis, but there’s so much to pre-check with UAB, and for now, they have to be considered underdogs.  No game is terribly out of reach in November. 

They host FAU and Temple and play at Navy and North Texas.  This team is especially used to winning at home, so that will be an ongoing 2023 check.  Can this rebuilt OL protect their QB?  What will the numbers show in the run game and pass defense percentage.

UAB Football Bottom Line:

4-8 as a ceiling, and maybe 2-10 if they lose that opener.  This is a very raw staff, and while new players step up everywhere when starters are lost, replacing this QB/RB combination is not going to be easy, and like I said above, losing every OL is a recipe for major regression.

UAB Football HANDICAPPING TIP:

My portfolio will be almost all vs. plays.  I’ll be patient in finding solid spots.  The only plus spot would be hosting FAU if UAB is off a Memphis win.
