UTSA football Preview 2023: UTSA Picks for Betting

Frank Wilson was fired after compiling a 19-29 record, and a 13-19 conference record.  Jeff Traylor came in and is 30-10 (0-3 bowls included). 

They move to the AAC but are expected to compete for the title almost immediately.  That, and their first ever bowl win are great goals to aspire to.

UTSA Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH

QB Harris returns for a 7^th season.  He’s accurate and confident.  They lose a potential day two NFL WR, who sadly transferred, but there’s nice talent that returns.  The offense loses their coordinator and that is about the only concern for this side. 

The defensive numbers are “adequate”, but vulnerable.  Modest talent returns.  The run defense seems a bit vulnerable (4.6 projected).  Kicking might drop.  A redshirt freshman with a big leg (9-14 from 40+ yards) takes for a solid PK.

UTSA 2023 Predictions, UTSA Schedule:

UTSA lost in triple overtime to Houston a year ago.  The rematch is at their place.  They edged Army 41-38 last year.  This rematch is at home.  Conference play begins right after their bye week.  I show three very “easy” home games, plus a game vs. generally road sound East Carolina. 

These teams have never met.  The road games are at likely improved Temple, at FAU and their new staff, at North Texas (home team has done well, another new staff) and at Tulane in what might be a very important finale.  My biggest checks will be the new offensive coordinator, the overall defense as they move to a slightly tougher conference and close game kicking.  Early kicking confidence is a must if they are to get past the tougher teams in the AAC.

UTSA Football Bottom Line:

7-4 heading to Tulane.  I’d like to have said more with what promises to be a solid aerial attack, but my concerns listed above are real..

UTSA Football HANDICAPPING TIP:

The Alamo Dome holds 60K, but average attendance is in the lower 20K range.  UTSA is 18-3 at home the past three seasons, but just 7-9 as a home favorite.  If my keys are correct then maybe East Carolina is a live dog.  If things are going well their road track record won’t be a deterrent to taking them as a favorite or dog.
