Oklahoma State Football Preview 2023: Oklahoma State Picks for Betting

Like with Oklahoma, Oklahoma State didn’t perform as expected in 2022.  The expected vs. achieved run numbers (offense and defense) told the tale.  There’s reason for optimism in 2023, but as shown below, also reason for some unusual concern.

Oklahoma State Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH

I expected regression from their 4.7-2.95 rush ratio of 2021, but their 3.75-4.8 figures were off-the-charts worse than expected. 

Offensively, the run game could rebound some, but I don’t see a go-to RB on the roster like in the past.  The system is good but the talent is hardly elite. 

Defensively, it’s a good thing that one-year coordinator Derrick Mason is gone, but all eyes will be on his Division II replacement, Byran Nardo.  With eight of their top ten tacklers gone, many JUCO’s will be on my watch list.  With only ten (approximately) returning starters, this on paper is not their best team.

Oklahoma State 2023 Predictions, Cowboys Schedule:

The good news is the conference schedule, which may be the easiest of all the teams.  They do not play Texas, TCU or Baylor, and do play all four new Big 12 members. 

Playing at ASU (massive roster turnover, young staff) “should” be a win, as should a home game vs. a good team (South Alabama) that is stepping up in class.  The conference opener at ISU is huge.  It’s been a closely contested series at their place, and I expect the same in 2023.  It’s a bonus that the Cowboys have two weeks to prepare for K St as they try to avenge a humbling 48-0 defeat. 

Revenge is the theme the next month when they host Kansas, travel to WV, and after hosting Cincy, host Oklahoma in what is certain to be an emotionally charged game.  The schedule is great, but how good is the team?  It’s my task to figure that out.  Avoiding a letdown when going to UCF is agenda item #1 after facing Oklahoma.  OK St closes at Houston and home to BYU.

Oklahoma State Football Bottom Line:

Despite underachieving in 2022, Oklahoma State still went 6-1 at home, continuing its stellar home field play.  Winning on the road will be the key to achieving 8-4 or higher, a task that is achievable mostly due to the weaker schedule.  My watch areas are the run game, the new DC and the incoming JUCO’s. 

This is not a 9-3 team, but that record is attainable.  That early visit to ISU is huge.

Oklahoma State Football HANDICAPPING TIP:

Could we see inflated lines due to a win record that doesn’t match their team talent? 

I’ll balance that thought with leans for Oklahoma St vs. Kansas State and vs. Oklahoma, while also looking to fade the Cowboys at UCF if the Oklahoma results yield directly to a letdown (and UCF is hardly a bad team coming into ’23).
