What happened?  Lincoln Riley left, but 6-6, plus a bowl loss was not the outcome anyone expected.  The offensive stat sheet was fine, but my concerns about defensive coordinator Ted Roof proved to be accurate. 

Most people expect this team to regain its footing as they prepare to leave for the SEC.  Is that realistic?

Oklahoma Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH

WR play was not perfect in 2022 but should improve some now, and they’ll again have an accurate QB distributing the ball. 

I am projecting them a bit down in the run game (4.75) with the loss of their lead RB.  Last year’s defensive numbers were 4.75-199 in the run game and 61.2% in the pass game (as always, I use just regular season stats). 

I expect some improvement in the run defense (4.35), but I’m not projecting pass defense percentage improvement.  Amazingly, Oklahoma allowed 38 or more points six times in Big 12 play.  The new staff was 0-4 in close games last year.  If they can hold teams down a bit more in ’23 then 6-6 could easily become 9-3 moving forward.

Oklahoma 2023 Predictions, Oklahoma Schedule:

Assuming a win hosting SMU, the Sooners have an excellent shot at opening the season 5-0, with conference games at rebuilding Cincy and home to Iowa State. 

Neither conference game may be easy (Cincy emotional 1^st power five game, ISU has played well at Oklahoma), but outright losses are not expected. 

Up next is Texas, who embarrassed Oklahoma 49-0 last year.  Having a break after that game is a good thing.  How will Oklahoma fare in road games at emerging Kansas and arch rival Oklahoma State? 

Offensively, they will be fine, but I’ll be watching Ted Roof’s defense carefully for clues.  Oklahoma has final play revenge when hosting WV.  The final games are at BYU and home to TCU.  TCU destroyed Oklahoma 55-24 last year but the Sooners have played well as a host in this series.

Oklahoma Football Bottom Line:

9-3?  I’m not sure Oklahoma is a 10-2 team but I like the schedule layout and I can see why they are a trendy pick to make the title game.  Can Ted Roof’s defense improve enough to close out the close games?  We’ll see.

Oklahoma Football HANDICAPPING TIP:

Last year in this section I noted that if my stat sheet numbers were correct, I would likely find a couple of fade spots. 

Given the easier early schedule, I’m okay fading them when not a rush pick (a 3-0 ledger in 2022).  I’m also leaning Oklahoma St on 11/4.  I’ll try to be balanced at other times.
