Texas Tech Football Preview 2023: Texas Tech Picks for Betting

Texas Tech was 7-5 in regular season play but I felt my under 6 wins play was the right side.  Their first two overtime wins came after win probabilities of 5% and 1% late in regulation. 

Their other close games resulted in two more wins, 14-10 at ISU and 51-48 in overtime (again) to Oklahoma, with a Sooner timeout giving Texas Tech a 2^nd chance. 

Does that mean regression in 2023?  Maybe not, as the Red Raiders are in year number two of their system, and the roster is getting better.

Texas Tech Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH

The projected starting 22 shows 10 seniors and 10 juniors. 

Tyler Slough could be an upgrade at QB if he ever stays healthy.  I’ve bumped the run game up from last year’s 4.15 per carry to a projected 4.4. 

Despite all the upperclassman starters, Texas Tech did lose five of their top six tacklers, one of them being high draft choice Tyree Wilson.  It’s year two of the new regime, which like TCU includes a proven defensive coordinator, so my projections are flat from a year ago. 

The new PK has “decent” numbers, but replacing a guy who delivered several clutch kicks won’t be easy. 

Texas Tech 2023 Predictions, Texas Tech Schedule:

Unlike other Big 12 schedules, Texas Tech has a tricky first two games.  They travel to Wyoming and then host Oregon, QB Slough’s former team. 

Both 2-0 and 0-2 are in play, maybe typical for this team.  Texas Tech beat WV 48-10 last year.  The rematch is at their place. 

Houston has overtime revenge, but that’s a Texas Tech home game.  Baylor gave Texas Tech its worst beating a year ago, 45-17. 

Now Texas Tech goes to their place, where close games (mostly losses) have been the norm.  Almost EVERY game after that could be won or lost.  Home games are vs. Kansas State, TCU and newcomer UCF.  Road games are at BYU, Kansas and Texas in the finale.

Texas Tech Football Bottom Line:

Can I say I don’t know?  I suspect the offense will be fine, but there could be front line regression and even close game kicking regression. 

Then again, there’s lots of older starters on this team.  The floor might be 4-8, but the ceiling is 9-3.  Unsure still about the Head Coach, I’ll tentatively call this 6-6, and another bowl berth.

Texas Tech Football HANDICAPPING TIP:

Until I get a better handle on the staff, my first look is underdog (dog was 5-6 ATS in their games last year).  I was 6-1 ATS in McGuire’s first year, so I’m not complaining
