South Carolina Football Preview 2023: South Carolina Picks for Betting

Shane Beamer has already pulled a number of upsets in his two seasons, four of which were as dogs of 11 or more points.

His 15-11 record isn’t bad considering he’s lost just once when favored. I have reasons to like and dislike them for ’23.

South Carolina Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH

QB Rattler ended ’22 with some great performances. Can that continue? The WR room is thin but a very highly touted 6’5” freshman WR is here and is a must watch. The lead RB transferred.

I’m dropping the yards-per-carry projection to just over 4.0. I will watch DII transfer RB Mario Anderson just in case he makes a difference. The sack ratio was 20-31 (18-28 regular season).

The OL looks no better (or worse), while the DL is a bit thin. Can JUCO’s and transfers step up to fill the void? Defensively, the depth chart says maybe not.

I like the staff (and there is an upgrade with a new DL coach), but the talent seems a bit down. Pete Lembo has long been regarded as an elite special team coach. His unit was super in ’22.

South Carolina Football 2023 Predictions, South Carolina Schedule:

Games 1-2 are interesting. They play North Carolina in neutral Charlotte and then face 10-3 Furman. They look 3-2 or 2-3 before their bye week depending on that North Carolina result, assuming that host Tennessee extracts revenge from their 63-38 loss.

I’ll pre-check the run game prior to their host of Florida. I expect a split at most in road games at Missouri and Texas A&M.

Given all the upsets South Carolina has achieved, that is possible. In a scheduling perk, all four November games are at home. 3-1 is the goal, achieved with a split of Kentucky (tossup history) and Clemson (Tigers rare revenge).

South Carolina Football Bottom Line:

7-5? I was thinking previously that the roster would mean closer to 6-6, but with an established QB and a great special team unit, I’m leaning 7-5 over 6-6.

I won’t be surprised if they start slow however, considering they only have eight returning starters. My biggest checks will be the run game, QB turnovers and finding improvement in the sack ratio.

South Carolina Football HANDICAPPING TIP:

I think we’ll see some high scoring games (talented QB, defensive concerns), but with the new clock rules I’ll not go wild on the overs, at least until some data points have been achieved. I’m leaning plus hosting Mississippi State Everything else will depend on the check points.
