Coming off back-to-back first-round stoppages across his last two fights, Britain’s Lawrence Okolie will aim to put his stamp on the heavyweight division on Saturday with a clinical performance against South Africa’s Kevin Lerena.

Okolie, who won titles at both cruiserweight and the WBC’s new weight class, Bridgerweight, will have all the spotlight necessary to shine as he fights immediately prior to the undisputed showdown between Oleksandr Usyk and Daniel Dubois in the main event.

Fighting in his home city of London, Lawrence Okolie enters Saturday’s contest as the -230 favorite, with Kevin Lerena coming back as a +180 underdog.

Okolie Looking To Conquer His Third Weight Class

While it hasn’t always been the smoothest of sailings for Lawrence Okolie so far, taking part in snoozefests against Isaac Chamberlain and getting wobbled and beat up by underdog Chris Billam-Smith two years ago also, the move up to heavyweight seems to be the right one for the Hackney man.

Back-to-back first round stoppages since that loss to Billam-Smith have the public excited once again, especially against fighters as well-versed as Lukasz Rozanski are, and if Okolie can put on a similar destructive performance this Saturday in the co-main event of an undisputed card, then he will plant his name firmly in the mix in the heavyweight division moving forward.

Good And Bad Memories For Lerena Last Time Out In London

Lerena’s previous visit to the English capital was an all-action affair two and a half years ago as he got stopped by current IBF champion Daniel Dubois in the third round of what was a pulsating matchup.

Lerena opened strongly in that fight, putting Dubois down with a big temple shot upstairs before Dubois was forced to go down twice more in the opening round due to some additional ligament damage.

However, despite the bright start for Lerena, Dubois managed to regain his composure and really started to put a beating on Lerena in the third round, leading to the stoppage.

The South African fighter will be hoping he can go one better this weekend against Okolie.

Kevin Lerena is a solid fighter, no question, who has fought some excellent names on his resume over the last few years, Daniel Dubois, Ryad Merhy, and Justis Huni included.

However, Lawrence Okolie’s height and length make him one of the hardest fighters to deal with in the entire sport, as he’s continually able to punish fighters from distance with that piledriver jab and right-hand combo of his.

For Lerena to have any shot of winning this fight, he’s going to have to run some red lights on Okolie on Saturday and jump inside the pocket, a strategy that will leave him extremely exposed to Okolie’s heavy right hand or his left hook.

I would not be surprised to see this one end inside the distance on Saturday, but for the purposes of the article, we’re happy to take Lawrence Okolie on the outrights for Saturday.
