Joe Cordina vs Jaret Gonzalez Quiroz Betting Analysis

Former IBF super-featherweight champion Joe Cordina returns to action this Saturday night on the undercard of the Jack Catterall vs. Harlem Eubank main event over in Manchester, England, taking on tough Mexican fighter Jaret Gonzalez Quiroz in his comeback fight.

Cordina, since losing his title in dramatic fashion against Belfast veteran Anthony Cacace in Saudi Arabia last year, has opted for a move back up to 135lbs, a currently loaded division that could present a ton of lucrative opportunities for the Welshman should he reign victorious on Saturday night.

Due to the vast gulf in experience between the two men ahead of this one, it comes as no surprise to see Joe Cordina being installed as the mammoth -2000 favorite this weekend, with Jaret Gonzalez Quiroz coming back as a sizeable +950 underdog.

Road To Redemption For Cordina

With back-and-forths taking place on social media between Joe Cordina and the other champions at super-featherweight, most notably O’Shaquie Foster, the world looked to be Cordina’s oyster at the beginning of 2024.

However, ‘The Apache’ Anthony Cacace put all that unification talk to bed with a brutal eighth-round stoppage of Cordina in Riyadh, the first and only loss of the Welshman’s career so far.

Now, the rebuild at lightweight is on, with Cordina unlucky not to get the Shakur Stevenson fight back in October due to Stevenson injuring his right hand.

However, Cordina remains a financial draw, and if he can shine once again here on Saturday, those big fights will no doubt come knocking on his door yet again.

Huge Opportunity For Quiroz

Mexican fighters over in the UK have continued to wreck best-laid plans, most recently with Francisco Rodriguez’s victory over Galal Yafai two weeks ago.

Jaret Gonzalez Quiroz aims to be no different than his fellow countrymen and put his own name on the map at the expense of the anticipated return of the hugely popular Joe Cordina.

To do that, the young fighter will have to put on a career-best performance this weekend against a boxer in Cordina who dwarfs him in both professional and amateur experience.

That said, Quiroz can bang, owning a 76.5% KO percentage across his career so far, and Cordina’s recent stoppage loss to Cacace might be all too fresh for the Welshman should the bullets start flying in this one.

Joe Cordina vs Jaret Gonzalez Quiroz Expert Prediction

Joe Cordina isn’t a fighter who’s particularly known for his power, yet he’s so fast and accurate in the ring that when he catches fighters flush, he can do damage, just as he showed in his sensational early stoppages of both Joshuah Hernandez and Kenichi Ogawa.

That said, Cordina needs to be careful in this one as Anthony Cacace put a severe beating on him in his last fight, a defeat that has aged reasonably well considering what Cacace was able to do against both Josh Warrington and Leigh Wood recently.

The last thing Cordina needs then, is to be dragged into a war of attrition against a young, hungry Mexican fighter with power.

That’s of double-concern here as Cordina has been guilty of getting involved in firefights in the past when he really didn’t need to, most notably against Shavkat Rakhimov recently, but when Cordina simply relies on his boxing skills, there are few in the sport that can match either his blistering hand speed or laser-like precision, two factors that should prove to be the difference-maker in this one.

Mexican fighters are usually as tough as they come, albeit with Quiroz getting stopped once previously earlier in his career.

Despite that, we’re edging towards a more cautious Joe Cordina performance this weekend, and at just ten rounds, we could well see this one make it the full distance on Saturday.
