Freeway Insurance 500 Track: Phoenix Raceway

The Freeway Insurance 500 takes place at Phoenix Raceway, a unique 1-mile asphalt tri-oval located in Avondale, Arizona, known for its flat corners and unusual layout.

The track features 9 to 11 degrees of banking in the turns, making braking, throttle control, and mechanical grip far more important than raw horsepower. Phoenix is famous for its massive frontstretch dogleg, where drivers dive below the traditional racing surface onto the apron, creating wild three-, four-, and sometimes five-wide battles on restarts.

Unlike traditional intermediate tracks, Phoenix rewards drivers who can get their cars to rotate through the center of the corners while maintaining traction on exit. Passing can be difficult during long green-flag runs, making track position, tire management, and pit strategy extremely important throughout the race.

Christopher Bell, Ryan Blaney, Kyle Larson, and William Byron have all demonstrated strong performances at Phoenix in recent years, with their ability to manage the flat corners and maintain speed over long runs giving them an advantage.

The Freeway Insurance 500 is a demanding race where precision, patience, and aggressive restarts can completely change the running order, making Phoenix one of the most technical and strategy-driven tracks on the NASCAR schedule.

Freeway Insurance 500 Top 5 Prediction: Kyle Larson +100

We’re going right back to Kyle Larson this week at Phoenix Raceway, and I absolutely love this spot. Larson has been outstanding at this track in the Next Gen car, holding the best average finishing position of any driver at an incredible 4.9. He’s finished inside the top five in six of seven races here, and those numbers alone are enough to make me interested in this play.

Phoenix has clearly been one of Larson’s strongest tracks, and there’s a reason he’s been so consistently successful here. Six top-five finishes in seven races is remarkable consistency, especially in a sport where so many things can go wrong over the course of a race. When we’re getting a driver with that kind of track history at plus money, I’m paying attention.

But there’s another angle that makes this play even more attractive. Larson enters this race holding a slim 27-point advantage in the standings, and next week the series heads to a superspeedway, which has traditionally been one of his weakest types of tracks. That makes this weekend extremely important for Larson and his team.

The way I see it, Larson needs to take advantage of Phoenix while he has the opportunity. He can’t afford to leave valuable points on the table at one of his best tracks with a much more unpredictable race looming next week. I have no doubt this team has had Phoenix circled on the calendar as a weekend where they need to maximize their points.

We have a driver with the best average finishing position at this track, six top-five finishes in seven Next Gen races and a major incentive to deliver a strong performance before heading to a track that doesn’t suit him nearly as well.

The track history is outstanding, the motivation is there, and we’re getting +100. That’s a combination I’m not passing up.
