Cook Out 400 Track: Richmond Raceway

The Cook Out 400 takes place at Richmond Raceway, a 0.75-mile D-shaped asphalt oval that combines the close-quarters racing of a short track with some characteristics of an intermediate.

The turns feature 14 degrees of banking, while the frontstretch is banked at 8 degrees and the backstretch just 2 degrees, making braking, throttle control, and corner exit extremely important.

Richmond is especially known for tire wear, as lap times can fall off significantly during long green-flag runs, rewarding drivers who take care of their equipment instead of using everything up early.

The wide racing surface gives drivers multiple options through the corners, and the preferred groove can change as rubber builds up throughout the race.

Pit strategy is huge here because fresh tires can be extremely valuable, forcing crew chiefs to decide between maintaining track position or giving up spots for better tires.

Drivers who are good at flatter short tracks and excel at managing tires over long runs generally have an advantage at Richmond. The Cook Out 400 is a race where patience, tire management, and long-run speed can be much more important than simply having the fastest car for a few laps.

Cook Out 400 Top 5 Prediction: Denny Hamlin (-140)

Hamlin is at the center of controversy this week as he has divulged that his brake system was a mess. Running most of the race with less than 10% brake pressure (his words) he still managed to use his superior experience, strategies, and overall skill to make a top 5 finish out of the day saying this was the best race of his life for what he had to deal with.

Fast forward to this week at richmond, we had the best possible set up race for this track. Many teams will be bringing the same packages they ran last week. I’d expect Toyota to have this brake issue figured out and an angry Denny is a dangerous Denny.

I’ll take the odds on favorite to win, in the best equipment, in a highly motivated position to place in the top 5 at a playable number. Get this in early because this line will take off with a good showing in qualifying.
