Scotland vs Ukraine Analysis

Standing in Ukraine’s way is a Scotland side who, while obviously sympathetic to the ongoing war in Ukraine, hasn’t made a World Cup finals themselves in over 24 years and captain Andy Robertson is eager to change that.

The winner of this game will then go on to face Wales in Cardiff on Sunday in the final qualification spot for this year’s World Cup.

Ukraine Eager To Give Fans Something To Cheer About

After an incredibly tough start to 2022 in real-world terms, Manchester City and Ukraine international Oleksandr Zinchenko has stated the whole team’s aim heading into this game is to make people back home smile.

However in more practical terms, while Zinchenko and some other Premier League-based players are no doubt match fit ahead of this game, over 50-percent of the national side plays in the Ukrainian Premier League, a league that hasn’t seen any action since mid-December.

Concerns are therefore valid as to the preparedness of this Ukraine squad ahead of this game, with a couple of hybrid club games not ideal preparation ahead of such a crucial fixture.

Scotland’s Injury Crisis Ahead Of Wednesday

Scotland is missing some of their key players ahead of Wednesday’s clash with Ryan Fraser, Ryan Jack, Billy Gilmour and Kieran Tierney, along with some additional players also, all expected to either miss out or play limited minutes in this one.

On top of that, Scottish captain Andy Roberston played all 90 minutes against Real Madrid at the weekend as well, so it’ll be a short turnaround for him also.

However, with the best Scottish national team in decades taking the field at home with a chance to move into this year’s World Cup finals after an extended 24 year wait, a wait punctuated by years in the footballing wilderness as well, expect Hampden Park to be absolutely rocking here on Wednesday night.

Scotland vs Ukraine Prediction

The outright draw in 90 minutes offers the best value ahead of this matchup as we expect both teams to play tight in this one.

Scotland has been incredibly hard to beat in Hampden Park, going unbeaten over their last 11 games there (W8, D3) and Ukraine hasn’t lost on the road since a 3-2 shootout loss against the Netherlands back in last summer’s Euro tournament.

While Scotland has the advantage of being at home here and has more match preparedness than Ukraine does overall, it’ll be offset by the fact that Ukraine has worldwide public sympathy ahead of this one and we could see some close decisions go Ukraine’s way here on Wednesday as a result.

Whether or not that takes place, the outright draw still presents the best overall value in this one and that’s the way we’re looking for Wednesday.
