Wales vs Ukraine Analysis

It’ll be a nervy afternoon in Cardiff on Sunday as both Ukraine and Wales look to qualify for only their second World Cup finals appearance ever for either team on Sunday.

Ukraine’s last appearance in the World Cup finals was back in 2006 where they had an impressive quarterfinal run before meeting eventual winners Italy to finally bow out of the competition. They’ll be eager to return on Sunday and deliver some hope for the people of Ukraine as the ongoing conflict in the country continues.

Wales has had an even longer wait for a World Cup finals appearance, last gracing the World Cup stage back in 1958, a mammoth 64-year wait in all. So the atmosphere will no doubt be electric in Cardiff this weekend as the home fans look to spur on the national side to an historic qualification.

Both sides have faced each three times over their history with Ukraine winning once and two draws.

A Nation Stands Behind Ukraine

While a 16-year absence would no doubt be nice to overcome as well for Ukraine in this one, the country as a whole, due to the ongoing war with Russia, has pinned their hopes on a Ukraine qualification on Sunday in order to lift morale in the country as the conflict continues.

That’s something the players are taking very seriously also as Wednesday’s man of the match against Scotland, Oleksandr Zinchenko, was quick to point out, stating in tears at the pre-match press conference that every single game is a “final” for Ukraine at this point and the team must deliver.

Cardiff A Fortress For The Welsh

Despite a recent 2-1 loss to Poland on Wednesday in which the Welsh drew first blood in that game before a late comeback by the Polish, this is the game that most Wales fans have circled as the big one over the last couple of months as all eyes will be on Cardiff on Sunday as the national team finally looks to overcome their epic World Cup finals wait.

But it’s a feat they’re capable of delivering as Wales are unbeaten at home since the end of 2018, a huge nineteen game unbeaten streak in Cardiff, which has put them firmly on the cusp of their first World Cup qualification in over 60 years.

Wales vs Ukraine Prediction

This will be a hard pill to swallow for either team on Sunday should their team go on and lose and with so much at stake, we could end up seeing a slower paced game play out here on Sunday.

Despite the focus Ukraine have shown up to this point, and the worldwide sympathy on their side as well, you simply can’t discount Wales’ impressive home form up to this point with teams such as Belgium, USA and Switzerland all coming up short here in Cardiff and Ukraine could well be no different this weekend.

Either way, with so little to separate either team in this one, we’re going with the outright draw on Sunday at around +205 as an extra-time result is definitely a real possibility for this game.
