Hungary vs England Analysis

Oddsmakers have instilled the Three Lions as heavy favorites in this matchup, but make no mistake about it, Hungary is far from a pushover and there is a reason they have made it to Group A.

It’s important to note that Hungary has been punished by UEFA for racial and homophobic signs during the Euro 2020 tournament and is being forced to play this game without fans.

However, in a very odd loophole, there is no limit on children under the age of 15 being able to attend the game. Rumor is there have been 30,000 tickets given out to those kids and for every ten children, UEFA allows one accompanying adult. So, the stadium won’t be empty, but don’t expect the same hostile environment that visiting teams have come to fear when traveling to Budapest.

Hungary the Giant Slayers

OK, maybe that tag line isn’t entirely true as they aren’t beating the best footballing nation, but they are playing well enough to give them fits and even steal points with draws. Hungary will not be a participant in the World Cup in Qatar later this year after finishing fourth in their qualifying group which consisted of this very England side, along with Poland, Albania, Andorra and the worst nation in UEFA, San Marino.

They did earn five wins in ten matches, but four of those were against Andorra and San Marino. Hungary did post a couple of good results though as they went to Poland and won on the final matchday while also giving England fits in a 1-1 draw at Wembley. Of course, they did also lose 0-4 at home vs England in their first meeting, so they are vulnerable to an ugly loss as well.

But let’s not forget their Euro 2020 performance. They were drawn into the group of death with France, Germany and Portugal but managed to draw against both France and Germany while losing to Portugal. In any other group, they had a legitimate chance of progressing to the Round of 16.

Three Lions Eyeing a Spot in the Finals

This is a welcome competition for England at a great time as they prep for the World Cup this fall. They are playing in a very tough group that obviously includes Hungary, as well as Italy and Germany. They will play Hungary twice along with the Euro 2020 champions and Germany in the span of ten days. Of course, all eyes will be on the Euro 2020 semifinal rematch as England will surely be out for revenge against Italy after losing on penalties, but Gareth Southgate cannot afford to look past Hungary here.

England have named a very strong squad for these Nations League games including the names you would expect to see: Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish and the 20-year-old phenom Bukayo Saka. Their backline is just as strong featuring Trent Alexander-Arnold, Harry Maquire, John Stones, Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker along with Jordan Pickford between the posts.

England rolled through their World Cup group as expected, going unbeaten in their ten matches with eight wins and two draws and a sparkling 39:3 goal differential. However, in their four matches against Poland and Hungary, the Lions won just one game by more than one goal. On that same token, England won all three of their Euro group stage matches by the same 1-0 score over Croatia, Scotland and Czech Republic.

Hungary vs England Prediction

This is a little bit of a tough spot for England to open their Nations League group. Yes, they are the better side and should win this game more often than not, but I don’t expect it to come easily. They cannot afford to look ahead to their matches with Germany and Italy and simply need to win this game if they want any chance at winning the group.

Hungary meanwhile knows how to get results against some of the best teams in the world and I fully expect them to come ready to give England hell. However, the raucous environment is what makes playing in Budapest when of the toughest venues to travel to. Without being able to host a full house of screaming fans takes away Hungary’s edge here and England should be able to secure the win by a couple of goals. Take England -1.25 on the Asian handicap.
