Germany vs England Analysis

Last year’s Euro tournament finalists, England, stumbled out of the blocks on Saturday with a 1-0 road loss to Hungary in their opening game of this year’s Nations League tournament.

The heavy -220 favorites enjoyed the majority of possession in that game but looked toothless in attack, with Dominik Szoboszlai eventually punishing them for those missed opportunities with a penalty midway through the second half for Hungary.

Germany, meanwhile, had to come from behind to snatch a point against Italy in their opening game on Saturday, but manager Hansi Flick will still no doubt be somewhat pleased with Germany’s performance in that game as they enjoyed the more clear cut chances overall.

The two old rivals have met eight times over the last 15 years with Germany owning a 4-3 advantage over England with one draw. Outside of friendlies, the series is 1-1 over that same time period in meaningful games with Germany thumping England 4-1 back in the 2010 World Cup and the English returning the favor with a 2-0 home win against the Germans in last summer’s Euro tournament.

Southgate Looking For More Urgency

England boss Gareth Southgate said his team looked flat and simply weren’t good enough in Saturday’s loss to Hungary and he’ll be looking to put things right in Munich on Tuesday.

That will be a tall order however as the Germans already lead the group in total shots, total shots on target and open play attacks across the opening game, and in a venue where German manager Hansi Flick knows all too well from managing Bayern Munich previously, England will need to be at their very best defensively in this game in order to keep the Germans quiet in this one.

Hansi Flick Still Not Satisfied

Despite a decent performance in Bologna on Saturday against last year’s European champions Italy, and a so far undefeated record since taking charge of the German national team, Hansi Flick has nevertheless stated he’s still not satisfied with where this team needs to be at the current time.

That pursuit of perfection has led the Germans to be absolutely ruthless at home over recent games however, with Germany averaging a colossal 4.75 goals per game at home over their last four international matches. So England definitely needs to be wary of Germany’s potent attacking threat ahead of this one.

Germany vs England Prediction

Germany looks like decent value at around +130 at time of writing to beat England at home here on Tuesday.

The last time Germany faced England they were knocked out of last summer’s Euro tournament by their old rivals, and the Germans are very likely still smarting from that loss in a major tournament.

Germany is usually good value in a revenge scenario as after England’s most famous victory here since the 1966 World Cup, a 5-1 demolition of the Germans in the 2001 World Cup qualifiers, Germany not only won the very next game they played against England, but also famously hammered them 4-1 in the 2010 World Cup as well.

The Germans can consider themselves somewhat unfortunate in their opening game against Italy as they did enjoy the greater overall chances in that game, but with home form and revenge on their side ahead of this one, we expect them to put things right here on Tuesday in Munich and hand England their second-consecutive defeat to open this year’s Nations League tournament.
