Kansas City Royals vs San Diego Padres Analysis

The San Diego Padres begin their road trip at Kauffman Stadium with a three game interleague series against the Kansas City Royals.

The Royals are coming off a two game split against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Meanwhile the Padres were swept in a two game series against the Cleveland Guardians in brutal fashion.

Neither team is in particularly good form but the Padres cling to a Wild Card spot, while the Royals season may as well be over. San Diego ace Joe Musgrove gets the nod, while Kansas City turns to the lefty Kris Bubic. First pitch is scheduled for 8:10 PM EST/5:10 PST.

Royals Can Only Play Spoiler

The Kansas City Royals enter this contest with a 51-75 record, landing them in 4th place in the American League Central. They have won two of three games on their current homestand including a 5-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday.

Brady Singer had a brilliant outing, holding them to only one run across seven innings while striking out six. Bobby Witt Jr hit a three run blast for his 18th home run of the campaign.

The Royals offense is still bottom five in almost any category across the board. The southpaw Kris Bubic will start for the Royals on Friday night.

He is 2-8 with a 5.29 ERA and 80 strikeouts across 95.1 innings pitched. Bubic took the loss in his last start against the Tampa Bay Rays after giving up four runs on eight hits in only 3.2 innings. He is backed by a bullpen that ranks 3rd to last in ERA on the season.

Padres Slumping Sluggers

The San Diego Padres enter this game with a 68-58 record after getting blanked 7-0 at home against the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday. Blake Snell was shelled for six runs on eight hits across only 3.1 innings. Josh Bell would get offensive standout, going 2 for 4 with a double.

The San Diego lineup has been ice cold recently, with only nine runs scored in their last six games. The Pades sit at 2nd place in the National League West, a staggering 19.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers.

They occupy the 3rd and final Wild Card spot, 1.5 games ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers and 2 games behind the Philadelphia Phillies. Joe Musgrove takes the bump for the San Diego Padres on Friday night.

He is 8-6 on the season with a 2.91 ERA and 136 strikeouts across 139 innings of work. In his last outing against the Washington Nationals, Musgrove gave up five runs on eight hits across six innings. He will be backed by a bullpen that ranks 10th with a 3.67 ERA.

Kansas City Royals vs San Diego Padres Prediction

The San Diego Padres are heavy road favorites with a money line set at -180, while the Kansas City Royals sit at +155 with a total of 8.5. The San Diego Padres have the edge in every phase of the games, however they have been inconsistent due to their inability to score runs.

The new additions of Juan Soto, Josh Bell and Brandon Drury have yet to fire on all cylinders and the back end of the lineup hasn’t done much to chip in.

However, a series against the vulnerable Royals pitching staff may offer the perfect get right spot. Kris Bubic has allowed four runs in each of his last two starts in limited innings. The bullpen that backs him is the leagues 3rd worst in ERA and dead last in WHIP.

The Royals staff has proven to be quite vulnerable at home of late. They allowed 10 runs in two games against the Arizona Diamondbacks last series and 21 runs in a three game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Kauffman Stadium last week.

I’m fully expecting the San Diego sluggers to come to life against some seriously inferior pitching. Let’s roll with the Padres team total over 4.5.

Prediction: San Diego Padres Team Totar Over 4.5 -130
