Detroit Tigers vs Kansas City Royals Analysis

The Kansas City Royals begin a three game series against the Detroit Tigers from Comerica Park. The Tigers split a two game series against the Giants in San Francisco, while the Royals lost two of three home games against the Texas Rangers.

Royals veteran righty Brad Keller gets the nod. While Detroit is officially listed as undecided but it looks to be Michael Pineda coming off the injured list. First pitch is slated for 7:10 PM EST/4:10 PST.

Royal Growing Pains

The Kansas City Royals are 27-47 on the season and have lost four of their last five games. They were able to salvage the third and final of a three game set 2-1 against the Texas Rangers.

Zack Greinke put the team on his back with six innings of one run baseball and the bullpen handled three scoreless innings to follow. M.J. Melendez went 2 for 3 with an RBI double.

The Royals lineup ranks poorly at 27th in runs scored, 25th in batting average and 21st in OPS. It hasn’t helped that Salvador Perez has been out of the lineup recently due to a sore thumb.

Kansas City will hand the ball to a struggling Brad Keller. He has a 2-9 record with a 4.56 ERA and 1.34 WHIP across 79 innings pitched. He only lasted 3.2 innings in his last outing, while allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits.

Toothless TIgers

The 29-45 Detroit Tigers are hot by their standards, winning three of their last five games. They fought hard against the San Francisco Giants, losing the first game 4-3 and winning the second game 3-2.

Rony Garcia gave his team a solid start with five innings of one run baseball. Javier Baez went 2 for 4 with a triple and two runs scored.

The Tigers have one of the absolute worst lineups in baseball as they rank dead last in runs scored. They also rank 27th in batting average and 29th in OPS.

It looks like it will be Michael Pineda returning from the IL to open this game. He has been out since mid-May but had a solid start to the season with a 3.22 ERA across 22.1 innings pitched.

Detroit Tigers vs Kansas City Royals Prediction

This game is s virtual pick’em with the Detroit Tigers sitting at -115, with the Kansas City Royals at -105 and a total of 8.5. This is definitely a battle between two of the leagues bottom feeders. Both teams come into this game in poor form and both struggle to score runs.

The one huge difference is the Tigers actually have a really good bullpen. It’s a huge edge as they rank 4th with a 3.17 ERA, while the Royals rank 27th with a 4.63 ERA.

This is going to be the deciding factor as neither starter is going to pitch very deep into the game. Give me the Tigers on the money line.

Prediction: Detroit Tigers Moneyline -107
