Los Angeles Dodgers vs San Diego Padres Analysis

The San Diego Padres take on the Los Angeles Dodgers in the second of a four game series. Southpaw Blake Snell takes the hill against right-hander Tony Gonsolin.

This game opened at -140 for LA and +120 for San Diego, and now the Dodgers are a -175 favorite, the Padres a +148 road underdog and the run total is 7.5.

San Diego Padres Betting Preview

Blake Snell has been struggling most of his 2022 season. In seven starts and 35.1 innings, he has a 5.60 ERA, a 1.44 WHIP with 38 strikeouts. The southpaw has kept the ball in the yard only giving up three home runs, but he’s allowed 19 walks.

However, Snell has shown signs of improvement in recent starts. And last year he pitched much better as the season went along. I saw him in person at Coors Field on June 19th, and his velocity was solid – in the mid to high 90s.

Manny Machado was back in the starting lineup in Thursday night’s game and went 1-for-4 with three Ks. Although it didn’t translate to a lot of runs, it’ll take some pressure off the rest of the Padres hitters until Fernando Tatis Jr. returns to the lineup – which should be soon.

Los Angeles Dodgers Betting Preview

Tony Gonsolin has developed into the Dodgers staff ace in 2022. His numbers are outstanding with a 9-0 record, a 1.58 ERA, 0.85 WHIP in 14 starts and 74.0 innings with 69 strikeouts.

One minor weakness in his game has been walks, as he’s given up 23 free passes this year – which comes to just under three per nine innings.

Even with Mookie Betts out of the lineup, LA has played good enough baseball to stay atop the NL West. Betts is expected to return soon from his fractured rib, but probably only as a DH until the All-Star break. However their offense has struggled in recent games and isn’t the powerhouse lineup we’re used to seeing.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs San Diego Padres Prediction

All Dodger games this year except four have had Big Blue covering the run line or losing outright. So the better bets for their games is to either take LA on the run line, or the opposing team on the money line.

I’d like to take the Padres in this spot, but they’re 1-12 against the Dodgers in their last 13 head-to-head games, and I feel like I’m trying to catch the proverbial “falling knife.”

This is a bit of a tricky handicap, but I think this game should be a hard-fought, low-scoring affair. That’s why I’ll go back to the well and take the 1st 5 Innings under.

Prediction: 1st 5 Innings Under Total Runs Scored
