San Diego Padres vs San Francisco Giants Analysis

The San Diego Padres host the San Francisco Giants in the first of a three game set at Petco Park. It’ll be a battle of southpaws as Alex Wood takes the hill for San Fran, and Blake Snell gets the start for the Friars.

Last weekend was rough for the home team, as they got swept by the Dodgers in LA, while the Athletics swept a rare two-game series in Oakland.

Even with their recent road woes, San Diego is still in the playoff hunt, as they have the third wild card spot if the playoffs were to begin today.

The Giants are still in contention at 6.5 games behind for the final wild card berth, but based on how they came back from the All-Star break, I don’t like their chances to make the playoffs.

After a great start to the year, the bullpen has imploded since then with the 4th-worst ERA in baseball. It’s hard to win when your relievers can’t consistently hold a lead or keep you in games.

Struggling Giants

Starter Alex Wood has had a decent 2022 for the Giants. In 21 starts and 106.0 innings, he’s posted a 4.42 ERA with a 1.25 WHIP and 105 strikeouts. The Giants’ southpaw has shown really good control, and only allowed 26 walks and 12 home runs.

The offense has steadily improved for San Fran throughout the season, as they now have the 13th best OPS at .713, but a disappointing .234 team batting average.

Similar to Arizona and Texas, the Giants have relied on the long ball to power much of their offense this year, as they’re 10th in MLB with 127 home runs.

San Diego Swept By L.A.

After a late start and a rough first half to the season, Blake Snell has figured things out and looked more like the pitcher we saw back in 2018. In five of his last six starts he’s only given up one earned run or less with 49 strikeouts, 15 walks and only allowed three home runs.

Even though last weekend’s series with the Dodgers was a disappointment, the Padres are still a dangerous team with the addition of Juan Soto, Josh Bell and J.D. Davis.

Up until the trade, the pitching had really carried the Padres this season. It’s obvious the San Diego front office wants to win now, and this team should be able to make – and do damage in – the postseason.

San Diego Padres vs San Francisco Giants Prediction

Although the Giants have hit southpaws better than the home team this year, the Padres have an edge in starting pitching and the bullpen. The home team will be looking to take out some frustration from getting swept by the Dodgers again.

The moneyline price is a little too juiced at -190, and I like the 1st 5 innings price better. That’s why I’ll take the Padres 1st 5 innings run line.

Prediction: Padres 1st 5 Innings Run Line (-0.5)
