San Francisco Giants vs Arizona Diamondbacks Analysis

The San Francisco Giants host the Arizona Diamondbacks in the third of a four-game set. San Fran rallied with two out in the bottom of the ninth behind a triple and home run to take game two 2-1.

Tonight it’ll be right-hander Zac Davies for the Snakes going against hard-throwing southpaw Carlos Rodon. First pitch is scheduled for 9:45 PM EDT at Oracle Park.

Arizona has struggled to score in this series with a combined two runs in two games. Pitching wasn’t good in game one, but really good in game two for 8.2 innings.

Ian Kennedy couldn’t close the door though and get that final out before the Giants rallied for two runs. They’ll need a good outing from Davies tonight, going against one of the best southpaws in the National League in Rodon.

Diamondbacks Send Davies To The Mound

Zac Davies isn’t an overpowering pitcher, but pitches to contact and tries to avoid hard contact. His season-long numbers are decent, as the righty has posted a 2-4 record in 18 starts with a 4.11 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP with 68 strikeouts, and has allowed 32 walks and 13 home runs.

This will be Davies’ first start facing the Giants this season, which gives him an advantage. However, he hasn’t pitched that well on the road. In nine starts he’s put up a 1-3 record with a 5.00 ERA, but a surprisingly low 1.16 WHIP. The problem has been the long ball, giving up an average of one home run per start.

Arizona faced the Giants at home back on July 25-27 and swept the three game set. While they’re playing better than they did last year, inconsistent hitting and a shaky bullpen have been the reasons why they’re 10 games below .500 at 53-63.

However, they have faced Rodon twice this season at home and had good results. In 11.0 innings, Arizona touched up the lefty for eight hits, nine earned runs and two home runs – but also had 17 strikeouts.

Rodon Dealing at Oracle Park

The Giants should be happy that they acquired Rodon this season, as he’s lived up to expectations with a sub-3.00 ERA and averaging 1.25 Ks per frame.

In 23 starts he has an 11-6 record, a 2.95 ERA with a 1.06 WHIP, giving up just 39 walks and nine home runs.

While the flame-throwing southpaw had a couple of less-than-average starts at Arizona, he’s pitched very well in Oracle Park. In 10 home starts he’s posted a 1.89 ERA with a 1.11 WHIP and 80 strikeouts in 57 innings.

San Fran is in the top half of teams with a 13th best OPS, but only 24th versus righties in team OPS the last 30 days.

San Francisco Giants vs Arizona Diamondbacks Prediction

Although Davies hasn’t pitched well on the road, this will be the first time Giants hitters have faced him this season. Rodon pitched much better at Oracle Park than on the road, and still struck out 17 Arizona hitters in his two road outings.

I think this should be a lower-scoring game in the first half, that’s why I’ll take the 1st 5 innings under four total runs scored.

Prediction: 1st 5 Innings Under 4 Total Runs Scored
