San Francisco Giants vs Arizona Diamondbacks Analysis

The San Francisco Giants host the Arizona Diamondbacks in the second of a four game series. The home team took game one last night 6-1, and the visitors hope to even things up. Merrill Kelly takes the mound against Jakob Junis, first pitch at Oracle Park is scheduled for 9:45 PM EDT.

Starting pitching and power hitting have been the main keys to Arizona’s success in 2022. Merrill Kelly and Zac Gallen have been the D-Backs two best starters this season, and Kelly has been consistent and reliable.

The right-hander has posted a 2.95 ERA with a 1.14 WHIP in 23 starts and 137.1 innings, averaging almost six frames per start. He’s also allowed just 42 walks and eight home runs on the season.

Kelly Has Giants Number

Kelly has pitched well against the Giants. In three starts and 20.1 innings he’s allowed four earned runs, 10 hits, five walks and struck out 17. Two of those were at Chase Field, the other at Oracle Park.

While Arizona hasn’t been a great hitting team on the season, they have gotten better over the last month. In the last 30 days versus right-handed pitching, the Snakes have the 12th best OPS versus righties.

Junis Won’t Last Long

Jakob Junis has pitched OK for San Fran, when he’s been healthy – which hasn’t been very often. The right-hander has made 11 starts and three relief appearances, pitched 64 innings with a 3,78 ERA, a 1.20 WHIP with 56 strikeouts.

He’s faced Arizona once this year on the road and went 4.1 innings, allowed three hits, one earned run and one walk with two strikeouts.

Junis is more of a pitch-to-contact guy and doesn’t usually go past the fifth inning, which gives me some cause for pause when a shaky bullpen may have to go at least three to four frames.

San Francisco Giants vs Arizona Diamondbacks Prediction

The Giants have a good season-long OPS, 13th best in baseball, but in the last 30 days against righties, they have the 22nd best OPS in MLB. That’s not a good trend going against one of the best right-handers in the National League in Merrill Kelly.

When we handicap games, we look at where the best value is. I give Kelly the starting pitching edge over Junis, both equally bad bullpens are a wash, and Arizona has hit righties better than the Giants in the last 30 days. The Giants are slight favorites on the moneyline, but I like the value we’re getting at plus money with the visiting team. That’s why I’ll take Arizona on the moneyline.

Prediction: Arizona Diamondbacks Moneyline +112
