2025 Genesis Scottish Open Course Preview

The 2025 Genesis Scottish Open lands at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland, from July10–13.

This par-70 championship stretches to roughly 7,237 yards, blending five par-3s and only three par-5s. It’s a true modern links test—firm fairways, thick fescue, and  coastal winds demand shotmakers who can curve and control the ball precisely.

Designed by Tom Doak, the course carves through East Lothian coastal terrain, with sweeping bunkers, undulating greens, and dramatic sea vistas.

Though it’s not the longest layout, it places a premium on iron precision and creativity, especially in windy conditions.

Pot bunkers and natural hazards stand between players and scoring chances, while the back nine—with its risk-reward par-4s and tricky par-3s—often decides the leaderboard.

Weather will dictate the tone: calm conditions usually yield low scores, sometimes reaching the high teens under par, but wind and rain can flip the script quickly, making a score around −10  enough to win.

With top names including Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, and defending champion Robert MacIntyre in the field, expect a compelling showdown ahead of The Open.

2025 Genesis Scottish Open Favorite Holes

Hole 13 – 418 Yard Par 4

I love this hole as it’s right along the sea with deep rough to the right of the fairway, and cliffs to the left. The fairway gets very narrow the farther the drive goes so players have a risk-reward situation off the tee.

If the wind is kicking up, the approach shot is  insanely difficult, but this year I don’t think it will be too troublesome.

Approach shots that go left are a big no-no as the rough and coast will gobble up the shots leading to a big number.

18th Hole Rating: 5.3 (Par 4, 483 Yards)

The 18th at The Renaissance Club is a solid but unspectacular finishing hole. At 483 yards, it  demands a precise tee shot with bunkers flanking the fairway and two stone walls bisecting the landing area, creating both visual and strategic challenges.

The approach shot is long, with  bunkers guarding the right side of the green and a sharp fall-off to the left that punishes misses. That said, if players find the fairway, the green is relatively accessible, offering a fair chance at par.

While the hole is well-constructed and pleasant to look at, it lacks the high drama or memorable design features often found in closing holes of major events. It’s a respectable closer —but not one that will define the championship.

2025 Genesis Scottish Open: Players That Can Trip You Up

Xander Schauffele is always going to get respect in the odds, but his 2024 season hasn’t quite lived up to expectations. Since the rib injury, he’s only posted one Top 8 finish and hasn’t been able to string together four strong rounds consistently.

His numbers look solid on paper, but the lack of closing power has kept him from contending. With finishes of 15th and 42nd here the last  two years, there’s little value at his current Top 7 price. He’s more name than win equity this week.

Viktor Hovland is being priced like a top-tier threat, but there are too many red flags to trust him this week. He finally showed life with a 3rd-place finish at the U.S. Open, but then promptly withdrew with a neck injury—raising serious concerns about how healthy he actually is.

Before  that, his 2024 season had been underwhelming, and he’s never finished better than 25th at this  event. At his current price, you’re paying for name value, not form or course history. He’s a fade until we see proof he’s healthy and sharp.

Ludvig Åberg is getting credit for his 4th-place finish here last year, but his current form doesn’t justify the hype.

He hasn’t finished better than 13th in the last three months, and his iron play has  been shaky while his short game and putting have been downright awful.

Since withdrawing from a tournament due to illness, he just hasn’t looked the same. Until he shows signs of turning it around, he’s a clear fade—especially at a course that punishes poor touch around the greens.

Genesis Scottish Open DraftKings Darlings

Connor Syme ($6,700) brings a strong mix of course comfort and emotional motivation into his  national open.

A proud Scot, he’s never missed the cut in six appearances at this event and finished 15th here last year. While he plays mostly on the DP World Tour, this week clearly means a lot to him, and he’s consistently shown up for it.

At just $6,700, Syme offers cut-making  security and local-course confidence—great value in this range.

Lee Hodges ($7,100) is trending in the right direction after a rough stretch earlier this season. He’s made four straight cuts, and his last three finishes—21st, 34th, and 9th—show real  momentum.

Over the last 30 days, he ranks inside the Top 30 in total strokes gained, a solid indicator of form heading into this week. At just $7,100, he offers great value with upside in both cash and GPP formats.

Denny McCarthy ($7,200) is one of the safest plays on the board this week, especially at this price. He’s made the cut in all 17 starts this season, showing week-in, week-out consistency that’s rare in this range.

His putting has been elite, gaining +0.75 strokes on the greens over the  last 3 months—exactly what you want on a course where birdies matter. He’s not a high-ceiling  play, but he’s a DFS lock for a made cut and potential top-30 finish.

Rest Of Lineup: Connor Syme, Lee Hodges, Denny McCarthy, Harry Hall $8400, Robert Macintyre $9100, Rory McIlroy $11400
