Genesis Scottish Open prediction data

The Course & Field – The Renaissance Club (North Berwick, Scotland)

From Nick Borrman:

The TOUR begins the shift to the home stretch as the best players in the world hop across the Atlantic to tee it up at this week’s Scottish Open in advance of the final major of the year, The Open Championship, next week.

The Scottish Open is now in its second season being co-sanctioned by both the PGA TOUR and the DP World Tour so while this is the 5th edition of the tournament, this is only the second season with a field nearly as deep as the major it precedes.

The TOUR also hosts the Barbasol Championship this week back in the States, so this field is small, with only 82 participants set to tee it up on Thursday morning. But five of the Top-6 players in the world are in the field, sans Jon Rahm, and nine of the Top-11 with the other exception being LIV Golf’s Cam Smith.

The course is a par 70 that plays over 7,200 yards. It is comprised of three par 5s, five par 3s and ten par 4s. The winning score will be dictated by the weather, the natural defense of any links course.

Last year Xander Schauffele won at 7-under while the tournament has also seen winnings scored of 18-under and 20-under. This week expects to play much like last year though, with steady winds throughout the four days and gusts exceeding 30 mph by Sunday.

Genesis Scottish Open Predictions

With winds expected to be a big factor this week, that screams ball-strikers and you can bet on the best of the field rising to the top by Sunday.

Genesis Scottish Open Outright Winner

Wyndham Clark +4500 (FanDuel)

I honestly didn’t think we would see a number like this available on Clark so soon after his US Open win. It was clear as day that Clark’s first PGA TOUR win was coming, but I certainly didn’t expect it to be at a designated event when he won the Wells Fargo Championship in May.

Then to follow that up with a major win only cements his status as one of the elite players in the world.

The slap in the face here is that oddsmakers have put up prices on guys like Tyrrell Hatton +2200, Tommy Fleetwood +2200, even Xander Schauffele +1400. These guys haven’t won in a year (or longer) and don’t have major championships on their resume. Makes no sense to me.

Clark had gained strokes on approach in 11 straight events until dropping strokes at the US Open which he made up for it off the tee, around the green and putting, however, and then again at the Travelers, which was to be expected in a letdown spot. Additionally, he has gained strokes putting in ten of the last 11 events as well.

Finally, Clark did play in this event last year and played well, finishing T16. He is a much better golfer now and should improve upon that this week.

Genesis Scottish Open Leaderboard Finish

Tyrrell Hatton Top-10 +260 | Top-20 +125 (Bet365)

Hatton is playing as consistently as anyone with just one missed cut over the last year, a run of 27 events worldwide. Over that span, Hatton has 16 Top-20 finishes including 11 in the Top-10.

Over just his last seven starts, his worst finish was a T27 which came at the US Open, breaking a run of six straight Top-20 finishes.

This season, he ranks:
8th SG Tee to Green
5th SG Putting
3rd Total SG
6th Scoring Average

Hatton did play here last year finishing T24 with very strong approach numbers, gaining nearly 5.0 strokes over the four days.

Hatton has the rare combination of distance and accuracy off the tee. He has gained strokes off the tee in every event in 2023 except the Match Play. He will rely on the driver once again to put him near the top of the leaderboard on Sunday.

Barbasol Championship

Peter Kuest +2500

Kuest officially earned special temporary membership on TOUR after making the cut again last week at the John Deere Classic and he intends to make full use of that membership with another start this week at the Barbasol.

Kuest is fun to watch hit the golf ball, simple as that. He absolutely smashes his driver and when even just one other part of his game is clicking, he can contend. Each of the last two weeks not only has he gained strokes off the tee, but he has also done the same on approach and putting to finish T4 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic and T17 at the John Deere Classic.

He wasn’t quite as sharp at the Canadian Open, finishing T57, but he also had a Top-20 at the Byron Nelson in May, finishing T14. Now in a field as weak as this one is, there is a reason he is one of the favorites and he could very well win this tournament.
