Rice football Preview 2023: Rice Picks for Betting

Nomad Rice was once in the old Southwest Conference. Now this school, with its small enrollment is in the AAC. The Mike Bloomgren era started slow, with a record of 1-20 in lined games.

Their BEST record in CUSA games was 3-5. There’s good news and bad news heading into this year.

Rice Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH

JT Daniels might be on his 15th school (just kidding) but this is a potential big QB upgrade. The WR unit is really good and the run game could be competent.

The schedule will be tougher, but the goal has to be better that the 22 points per game average they had last year in CUSA play. Nothing great has been happening defensively.

Four of their top five tacklers return. I’m looking at the run D improving on last year’s 5.05 allowed per carry, but that needs to be charted out.

Special team play has been subpar. Kicking has been decent, but now they have a new PK that has to be charted.

I applaud the decision to change special team coordinators, and the new guy has had success in that role. Two keys for me are reducing sacks allowed and improving on their -13 turnover ratio.

Rice 2023 Predictions, Rice Schedule:

Rice has had no success vs. Houston but that early home game is interesting, as Bloomgren is in his 6th year, and either they start competing or it’s time for a change.

On 9/23 they head to USF (new staff). Shouldn’t this be a win? Even a host of East Carolina should be competitive, but they would be double-digit dogs based on last year’s ending Power numbers. A host of UConn follows, and I think a loss to East Carolina could lead to more home apathy.

Rice is 2-10 on the road the last two seasons. Can they be competitive at Tulsa and their new staff (nine returning starters)? Are home games vs. Tulane and SMU still too daunting?

I’ll pre-check Rice’s turnover proclivity, their defense for any signs of life, and the kicking game. Rice closes hosting FAU. How has Rice fared at home up to this point, and is there any pattern with FAU on the road?

Rice Football Bottom Line:

4-8 or 5-7 and a coaching change. There’s enough offensive talent to win six games, so it all comes down to turnovers, defensive improvement and the kicking game.

Rice Football HANDICAPPING TIP:

None for now, but if the stat sheet can’t improve, I’d rather fade than follow when favored.
