Hawaii Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH

The defense allowed 5.75 per carry and 64% through the air, with just 17 defensive sacks. Four of the top five tacklers return, but how much improvement we’ll see is up for debate.

Chang likely has an idea of how he wants to shape the offense, but production was down in ’22, and accuracy was way down (53%), albeit with better protection.

There’s little incoming transfer help, so they’ll have to coach up the potential starters (five return overall). Kicking is never easy on the Islands, but Hawaii football has a good PK and that’s a true advantage.

Hawaii 2023 Predictions, Hawaii Schedule:

Hawaii might be run over just like last year in their game at Vanderbilt. A host of Stanford is next. The Cardinal return just six starters but Hawaii will still be the underdog. 3-8 Albany is next, and the resulting stat sheet from this game better be impressive.

There’s revenge when hosting New Mexico State, but Jerry Kill is a solid coach and his team outperformed all expectations a year ago, with a bowl appearance (and win!), plus extra practices.

Still, it’s New Mexico State’s 3rd in a row on the road, and this is a long trip. Hawaii upset UNLV as a double-digit home dog a year ago.

The rematch is at their place. Games 7-10 actually offer hope, IF the stat sheet shows improvement. They host San Diego State, a team that beat Hawaii only by two points at their place.

They travel to potentially the league’s worst team, New Mexico. They host San Jose State, who might be improved, but has never been dynamic.

Lastly, they head to Nevada, a team they beat by 15 a year ago. The closing schedule is tougher, but let’s see if Colorado State has any motivation that final weekend (just a 17-13 loss at their place a year ago).

Hawaii Football Bottom Line: How Many Wins, Then?

It’s year #2, so something should look better, right? If so, I could see a couple of close wins in tossup games thanks to their PK.

The ‘safe” prediction is 4-9, but there’s an opportunity to be more competitive this season. Keep a close eye on QB accuracy and on all defensive numbers.

Hawaii Football HANDICAPPING TIP:

Information here was just 2-2 ATS a year ago (1-1 record for me). With a solid scheduling edge, maybe they cover with an inflated spread hosting New Mexico State.
