UMass football is 21-103 the past eleven seasons, and 3-39 lately, with wins over then 0-12 Akron, 1-11 UConn, and last year, mighty Stony Brook. This seems like fun.

UMass Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH

Everything related to offense. Their QB’s combined to hit 49%, throwing four TD’s while giving up 14 interceptions. 9-11 lined games had them score a maximum of 13 points.

I think UMass football OL looks better, but I’ll chart everything else. It may surprise some, but the defense did improve. The 2021 numberss were as follows: 485 yards allowed and 43 points allowed per game, 5.8 per carry run D, 64.5% pass D, and 11 defensive sacks.

The 2022 numbers were 370 yards allowed and 31 points allowed per game, 5.0 per carry run D, 53.8% pass D and 18 defensive sacks. Let’s see what year #2 for Don Brown brings.

UMass 2023 Predictions, UMass Schedule:

UMass has lost 24 straight road games. Maybe they play Eastern Michigan or Army close, but right now I’ll assume they won’t be road competitive.

It’s “easier” to face Miami Ohio in September, as they typically start really slow. They return plenty of starters however.

I “expect” this team to win at least once in games hosting lowly New Mexico and Arkansas State. I’ll pre-check QB play and the entire offense, knowing that based on last year’s Power numbers, UMass could still be a sizable dog in both.

The other winnable game is vs. 8-3 Merrimack. Why does it feel that UMass could lose this type of game?

UMass Football Bottom Line:

My 2-10 assessment last year was a game too high. There’s not been an infusion of offensive talent, but there’s enough experience to have some hope that 2022 was rock bottom, and this year they improve. I’m still at a 3-9 ceiling, and unless I see stat sheet progress, 2-10 is firmly in play.

UMass Football HANDICAPPING TIP:

The only game I would consider them at this time would be at Eastern Michigan, if the offense can show any signs of life.

UMass football was a double-digit dog ten times last year. I typically have no action on their games, which is fine with me (if anything, I’ll look vs. if I see a line that’s off of my number).
