Premier League Match Day 32 Betting Preview

With the World Cup heading to North America this summer, The GoldSheet will be ramping up its soccer coverage over the next few weeks. WagerTalk handicapper and GoldSheet’s featured writer Bruce Marshall shares his thoughts on how Sunday’s Sunderland vs Tottenham clash in the English Premier League will shake out.

Daily Betting Analysis from GoldSheet

GoldSheet is the country’s longest-running sports betting newsletter providing weekly coverage of the NFL and college football, plus daily coverage of the NBA and college basketball, for nearly seven decades. Tottenham’s Current Form

Here we go again with Tottenham, another change behind the bench after the Igor Tudor experiment effectively blew up on the launching pad. With West Ham winning big on Friday in London over Wolves, Spurs will step on the pitch at the Stadium of Light in the drop zone…albeit with a game in hand.

Games in hand, however, don’t help if you can’t get results, and all Spurs have to show for 13 starts since the calendar turned to 2026 are five draws. That’s also just 5 points from a possible 39 that Roberto De Zerbi inherits, with a fresh five-year deal, and many Spurs supporters already lamenting the choice after De Zerbi’s latest managerial foray ran aground at Marseille (though he did make a nice name for himself a few years earlier in the EPL at Brighton).

The Tottenham fan base is also left to wonder about the supposed plans to bring back preferred choice Mauricio Pochettino after his World Cup duties for USA, but for the moment it’s about survival with Spurs, and they’re in a box. (This looks to us another unimaginative hire by new chief exec Peter Cherrington, a banker by trade and ENIC’s choice to succeed Daniel Levy–who still owns a share of the team–as the chief decision-maker; the Tudor disaster, and the De Zerbi hire, are both on Cherrington).

By us, we wonder if running it back with Ange Postecoglu wouldn’t have been a better option; after all, Ange is the only manager who has managed to win with Tottenham the past few years, steering Spurs into Europe both seasons, winning the Europa League last May, but instead cast aside because of a 17th-place EPL finish last year that misleads, never threatened by relegation, and given emphasis on real European silverware last spring, it would have only taken a close result or two landing the other way for Spurs to move up a few slots from 17th.

Also, it was Levy, not calling the shorts any longer, who moved Postecoglu out after last season, not Cherrington, so we think a reunion would have been a bold and likely proper move, especially as we doubt a full season of Ange would have Tottenham in the current pickle.

With just 13 goals scored and 27 conceded since New Year’s, it’s just not working on the pitch…we’ll see if De Zserbi has a better idea how to organize the troops than did Tudor.

Sunderland’s Current Form

Speaking or organized troops, that’s exactly what Regis Le Bris had done at Sunderland, still in contention for a European place late in the season in a smashing return to the Prem after last spring’s promotion.

Ex-Ajax striker Brian Brobbey has emerged as a useful weapon, especially after his late match-winner at Newcastle before the international break, and one of several roster upgrades from last summer made by Le Bris, with the add of Swiss midfielder Granizt Xhaka from Bayer Leverkusen also looking a stroke of genius.

Though Sunderland’s home form has wobbled a bit lately, losing three straight as host, the Black Cats had made Stadium of Light a real fortress earlier this season, unbeaten their first twelve at home.

Sunderland vs Tottenham Prediction

Sunderland on the straight win at +175 is simply too good to bypass; that’s our main recommendation here, by a good margin; you can stop there as we wait to see if De Zerbi can do what Thomas Frank and Tudor couldn’t before tabbing Spurs to do anything but lose.

If looking for a few supplemental wagers, Sunderland on Halftime/Fulltime at +350 is awfully tempting, and the now-confident Brobbey at +200 to score might also be worth a look.

For a walk on the wild side, a correct score 2-1 Sunderland would return +1100.
