Espanyol vs Villarreal Betting Analysis
Two teams who have struggled for consistency over recent games clash in the midweek as Villarreal travels over to Barcelona to take on Espanyol in Spanish La Liga action on Wednesday.
Villarreal has lost back-to-back games heading into Wednesday’s matchup against Ath. Bilbao and Mallorca, and manager Quique Setien will no doubt look for a big response from his team in this one.
Espanyol is winless in their last four matches, but have managed to grind out three straight draws over that run. However, with just one point separating them from relegation this year, they need to start converting those draws into wins.
Villarreal smashed Espanyol 5-1 in their last meeting back in February, but prior to that, had only won one of the last nine meetings with Espanyol.
Villarreal’s Road Struggles Continue
Since back-to-back road wins at the start of the season for Villarreal, including an excellent 2-0 victory over Atletico Madrid, the ‘Yellow Submarine’ has really come off the boil during recent away trips.
It’s been six straight road games now without a win for Quique Setien’s side and alarmingly, no goals scored over that run as well.
Espanyol Continues To Show A Ton Of Grit This Season
While the Parakeets haven’t always shown the best beginnings in games this year, conceding the opening goal in ten of their 13 matches this season (the highest number out of any team in La Liga), they have shown a remarkable ability to fight back from those situations.
Their last four draws from those down-early scenarios where they got the equalizer, all came within just 25 minutes of that initial goal. So while manager Diego Martinez would no doubt prefer that Espanyol not fall behind in games at all, this team has nonetheless shown a ton of heart in order to bounce back from those spots.
Espanyol vs Villarreal Prediction
We’re siding with Espanyol in this one catching a quarter-goal headstart here at home on Wednesday to get a result against Villarreal.
It’s not the strong recent head-to-head form between the two or Villarreal’s recent poor away form that has us on the underdog in this one, although those certainly help. We are more focused on the recent data from both teams.
Defensively, Espanyol has been far better than Villarreal on both home/road split form this season and recency bias also, and we expect that to show here on Wednesday.
