Champions League Final Analysis

A new European champion will be crowned this Saturday night in the Stade de France in Paris between either 13-time winners Real Madrid or six-time winners Liverpool. This will be a battle between two of the most successful clubs to ever compete on the European stage.

Liverpool is going off as the sizeable -175 favorites to lift the trophy ahead of this one with Real Madrid coming back at a +140, but history is far from in agreement with those odds as Real Madrid have dominated Liverpool over the last decade, winning four of their five head-to-head matches outright with one draw.

Madrid striker Karim Benzema has been on fire over this European campaign so far, netting 15 goals in total – Ten of which have come in just the knockout rounds alone. However, he faces a Liverpool side who have allowed the fewest number of offensive shots on goal to opponents this season in the Champions League at just 6.7 per game on average.

Real Madrid’s European Record

‘Los Blancos’ are the most successful team to ever compete in Europe, winning the continent’s biggest trophy a record 13 times over their storied history.

However, one of the teams they’ve had the most trouble against in Europe has actually been Liverpool, who has beaten Madrid three times on the European stage, including the 1981 European Cup final.

Madrid have a 39.6% win rate against English opposition in European competition over their history, but that has seen a marked increase to 50% since 2010, including 64.3% in purely knockout competition as well.

Liverpool’s European Record

The Reds have also been one of the most dominant teams in Europe over the history of the old European Cup/Champions League competition.

Six-time winners with four of those coming in a purple patch during the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, they’ve nevertheless been a constant force at this level of the tournament.

Liverpool has a 40% win rate against Spanish opposition over their European history so far, with that number dropping to just 35% since 2010 and Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp is 4-4 overall in knockout football against Spanish opposition also.

Real Madrid vs Liverpool Preview

Both Thiago and Origi look to be serious doubts ahead of Saturday’s final for Liverpool and the Thiago injury in particular will be a huge blow for Liverpool should he not play in this one as the Spanish midfielder leads Liverpool in overall tackle success rate this season.

Real Madrid looks to have a clean bill of health ahead of Saturday’s final with only Eden Hazard looking to be sidelined, but the Belgian hasn’t played any serious minutes this season as it is so shouldn’t present much of a concern for Carlo Ancelloti ahead of this one.

Both teams are 1-1 in European Cup/Champions League finals going back to both 1981 and more recently in 2018 where ‘Los Blancos’ won 3-1 and that man Benzema scored the opening goal of the game.

At +450, not many would write him off repeating that success again here on Saturday.
