Real Madrid vs Chelsea Analysis

After a shocking 3-1 defeat at home to Real Madrid last time out, current European champions Chelsea have it all to do at the Bernabeu on Tuesday evening as they look to book their place into the last four for the third time in four years.

Both teams came off solid wins at the weekend with Chelsea routing Southampton 6-0 on the south coast while Real Madrid scored a routine 2-0 victory over Getafe at home.

Chelsea Looking for Inspiration

Not exactly known for his positive team talks, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has already declared this tie over, a bit premature perhaps after his side came off putting six goals past a solid Southampton side at the weekend.

If Chelsea is going to reverse this tie, however, they’re going to have to be far more clinical in front of goals than they were in that first leg. The Blues out-shot Madrid 20-to-8 and won the xG battle also, only for a red-hot Karim Benzema to punish them by taking his chances in front of goal while Chelsea was wasteful with theirs.

Real Marid Hoping Lightning Doesn’t Strike Twice

Real Madrid will be all too aware that they can’t rest on their laurels just yet ahead of this game as they themselves proved in the last round what a precarious lead two goals can be in this competition.

PSG looked in absolute cruise control in the second half of game two against Madrid in the last round, holding a two-goal advantage with just 45 minutes left to play. However, Real Madrid bounced-back through the efforts of Karim Benzema once again as he scored yet another hat-trick, his second in as many starts now for Real Madrid in Europe.

Real Madrid vs Chelsea Prediction

Chelsea have it all to do ahead of leg two as only one team over the last 43 attempts in Champions League knockout history has managed to overturn a two goal deficit on the road from the first leg.

However, it’d be nonetheless foolish to write them off as Chelsea have shown time and time again how good they are in intense under pressure situations, especially at this stage of the competition.

Despite all of their recent issues, both in Europe and in the political sphere also, Chelsea is still finding ways to get it done, averaging 3 goals per game since March 1st over in the Premier League, owning the league’s second-highest xG average, the third-highest xPTS average and ranking fourth in total opponent goal attempts this year in Europe, with only Bayern, Liverpool and Manchester City allowing less goal attempts to opponents this season than the Blues have.

With the away goals rule scrapped, Chelsea have a real shot to progress in this one and whether they manage to overturn the deficit or not, taking them on the plus quarter goal handicap line here on Tuesday presents value.

Take Chelsea +0.25 as the Champions League play for Tuesday against Real Madrid.
