Napoli vs Ajax Prediction – Napoli Continues to Impress
Napoli entered this year’s Champions League competition as an intriguing team to watch, but the Italian leaders have taken Group A by storm thus far. In their first loop against Liverpool, Ajax and Rangers, Napoli has earned three wins with a 13-2 goal differential. Napoli has gone from a darkhorse in the competition to a legitimate threat to win it all in a little over a month.
That good form has not been limited to the Champions League, either. Napoli currently sits atop the Serie A table with seven wins and two draws in their first nine domestic league matches. Napoli has won eight-straight matches across all competitions, with five of those eight wins coming by a multi-goal margin.
With a home match against 17th-place Bologna on deck, we expect Luciano Spalletti to play his full-strength squad on Wednesday then potentially rest some pieces on Sunday, if needed.
Not Much from the Dutch
The most notable result in Napoli’s recent run came in Amsterdam last week where Napoli bludgeoned Ajax 6-1. Ajax has built up plenty of goodwill from Champions League bettors over the last few seasons, but it’s pretty clear that this year’s squad is not on the same level as the one that went to the semifinals in 2019 or the one that progressed to the knockout round last year.
Despite playing just half of their group stage matches, Ajax manager Alfred Schreuder has already admitted that his squad is likely playing for third place and is unable to challenge Napoli or Liverpool at the top of Group A. Former manager Erik ten Hag left the club in April to join Manchester United, and a flood of Dutch talent went with him.
In years past, Ajax was able to dedicate its top resources to European competition because of the dominance they enjoyed at the top of the Eredivisie. Things are looking a lot tighter at the top of the table this year with only three points separating AZ Alkmaar, Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord through the first quarter of the season. Alkmaar also has a head-to-head win over Ajax, so the Dutch champs can’t put all of their eggs into the European basket at the moment.
Napoli vs Ajax Prediction
While we don’t expect to see another 6-1 scoreline in this one, we do expect another dominant performance from the Italians. That 6-1 scoreline in Amsterdam was not a fluke, because the xG numbers (4.21 to 1.26) back up Napoli’s impressive showing. Ajax midfielder Dusan Tadic will miss this contest because of a red card picked up last week.
