FC Halifax Town vs Chesterfield Analysis

The quarterfinal stage is set for this year’s National League playoffs as 7th-place Chesterfield face off against 4th-place Halifax on Tuesday for the chance to meet Wrexham in the semifinals.

Halifax will no doubt feel confident ahead of this one as the ‘Shaymen’ owned the league’s best home record this season with 17 wins from 22 games. That likely won’t be the case for Chesterfield, however, as the ‘Spireites’ ran out the league on a four game winless run and will need to turn things around quickly if they’re going to progress in this tie.

The two sides have met twice this year already with Halifax winning 2-0 at home against Chesterfield just last month and a 1-1 draw taking place at Technique Stadium back in December.

Huge Loss For Chesterfield In Attack

Chesterfield’s top scorer and the player with the league’s top contribution rate this season, Kabongo Tshimanga, suffered a fractured leg and dislocated ankle in a league game against Weymouth back in February.

That injury effectively ruled Tshimanga out for the rest of the season and Chesterfield’s goal scoring form has taken a noticeable dip as a result.

However, there are rumors Chesterfield’s star man could perhaps make a surprise appearance in this crucial playoff game on Tuesday as his recovery continues to improve and if that’s the case, that would be a massive boost to the away side ahead of this one.

Halifax’s Impressive Home Form

It’s been a hugely impressive run for the Shaymen over 2022 so far with Halifax not losing a single game at home in the National League going all the way back to January 26th’s close loss against Boreham Wood.

More importantly, that home form has seen Halifax give up by far the fewest goals in the league to opponents this season at just 0.50 goals per game (they also own the league’s No. 1 overall opponent goals allowed rating as well).

That defensive presence could be key here on Tuesday against a Chesterfield offense which has averaged just 0.25 goals per game over it’s last four starts.

FC Halifax Town vs Chesterfield Prediction

It’s difficult to look past a Halifax win here on Tuesday, especially considering with how solid they’ve been at home this season.

Five of Halifax’s last six wins at home have came accompanied by a clean sheet and without Tshimanga in attack, Chesterfield have looked a little toothless in attack over the back half of the season.

With Halifax going off on the pick ‘em line (+0) at around -140 right now, that gives us protection against the draw and that’s the way we’ll look to play this one on Tuesday between Chesterfield and Halifax over in the English National League quarterfinal.
