Brazil’s Current Form

Historically speaking, no one is better in the group stage of the World Cup than Brazil, who has won its group in every tournament since 1978. Plenty of questions surround Brazil entering this year’s event after a lackluster effort in CONMEBOL qualifying, but those questions likely won’t get asked until the knockout stages.

Brazil’s defense was very strong during the 18-match South American campaign. Removing the final match against Bolivia where Brazil had nothing to play for, Brazil only allowed 12.14 expected goals in the other 17 matches.

Brazil has a history of easing its way into tournaments with some low-scoring affairs. In the 2018 World Cup, Brazil’s opening match against Switzerland finished 1-1. In the 2022 World Cup, Brazil beat Serbia 2-0 in the opening match. In the 2024 Copa America, Brazil’s opening match against Costa Rica finished 0-0.

Morocco’s Current Form

International soccer is a “What have you done for me lately?” business, and Moroccan manager Walid Regragui found that out the hard way. Four years ago. Morocco became the first African nation to reach the World Cup semifinal but Regragui was not given the opportunity to replicate that feat. After a less-than-impressive qualifying effort, Regragui was shown the door and Mohamed Ouahbi was given the reins just three months ago.

The Moroccans enter this tournament with a solid foundation on defense, but the firepower is lacking on offense. Morocco advanced to the AFCON final in December, but they were desperately lacking a spark on offense.

In seven matches, they only generated 1.00 expected goal from open play two times. Four of Morocco’s goals came from set pieces and they were awarded three penalties in the tournament. That might work against the other two teams in this group, but that strategy likely won’t work against the Brazilians.

Brazil vs Morocco Prediction

Morocco was involved in a disastrous friendly with Norway over the weekend as Ez Abde and Noussair Mazraoui were both forced to leave the match early with injury.

While there has been no official confirmation, early report suggest that Abde suffered a serious leg injury that will likely force him to miss the tournament. On a team that was already missing some firepower, Abde’s absence is likely to be felt. He scored 15 goals in 43 matches for Spain’s Real Betis this season.

Morocco’s defense allowed one goal through the first five matches of the 2022 World Cup, holding Croatia, Belgium, Spain and Portugal scoreless. The Moroccans will likely lean on a similar script to try and squeeze a point out of this matchup with Brazil.
