Brooklyn Nets vs New York Knicks Predictions

  • Brooklyn Nets -6 vs New York Knicks
  • Total: 216.5 Points
  • The Knicks have covered the spread in six of the last seven meetings between these teams.
  • The under is 9-3 in the last 12 meetings between these teams.

Looks like it will be a New York state of mind on Tuesday night for the 11-8 New York Knicks when they take a short trip over to the Barclay’s Center to face the 14-6 Brooklyn Nets. The Nets are coming off a 113-107 home loss to the Phoenix Suns on Saturday night. No shame in that loss, due to the fact that nobody beats the Phoenix Suns. Prior to that loss the Nets had won 7 of their prior 8 games, as they sit in first place in the Eastern Conference.

The Knicks are coming off an impressive 99-90 victory in Atlanta over the Hawks on Saturday night. However since starting the season 5-1 the Knicks have played below .500 basketball since, going 6-8 in their last 14 games. Both teams have made recent headlines with news of a major injury and a star starting player being taken out of his team’s rotation. This will be the first of four head-to-head matchups, so it will be interesting to see how these teams stack up against each other.

The Brooklyn Nets have been dealing with distractions since the beginning of the season, starting with the Kyrie Irving saga. However, Blake Griffin won’t be one of them as he’s kept a great attitude since being removed from the rotation in favor of LaMarcus Aldridge. The Nets will also be dealing with a major injury as Joe Harris will be out for four to eight weeks after having surgery on his left ankle.

When you think about the Brooklyn Nets you think offense, however they rank only 13th offensively. They are shooting the ball at a 46.7% clip, good for 4th in the association. The big surprise has been the Nets defense that ranks 7th in defensive rating. The Nets have been on a roll winning 12 of their last 15 games and they will be a contender as long as both Kevin Durant and James Harden remain healthy.

The Knicks snapped a 7 game Atlanta win streak on Saturday with a 99-90 win over the Hawks. However, the big news out of New York is Kemba Walker not only being removed from the starting lineup, but the rotation entirely. Walker has been a starter since the 2nd season of his career, but has cooled off tremendously in November as his shooting numbers have plummeted.

Head coach Tom Thibodeau told reporters on Monday that “While he has great respect for Walker, he had to do what was best for the team.” To put things in perspective, while Walker is on the court they are being outscored by 13 points per 100 possessions while outscoring the competition by 11 points per 100 possessions without him. New York has been dealing with nagging injuries of their own between Taj Gibson and Nerlens Noel, both will be game time decisions on Tuesday night.

The Knicks rank middle of the pack in both offense and defense, ranking 16th and 17th respectively. Going forward the Knicks should improve now that Thibodeau is running a tighter rotation similar to last season.

The Brooklyn Nets are favored by 6 points with a total set at 216.5. The Nets are 12-3 against the spread in their last 15 games while the Knicks are 5-10 in their last 15 games. The Nets do rank 7th in pace of play, however they have also been getting the job done on the defensive side of the ball. The Knicks play at a far slower pace as they rank 25th overall. New York has struggled shooting the ball while the Nets have done a solid job limiting opponents from beyond the arc. The Knicks will crowd the paint and limit easy put backs for the Nets.

The total has gone under in the Knicks last 5 games and 11 of their last 13 games overall. Brooklyn will also be adjusting to life without Joe Harris, which could slow them down offensively. My official play will be on the under as it seems relatively high at 216.5. Evan Fournier has been on fire from three point land recently, hitting 3 or more three’s in 4 of his last 5 games. Without Kemba Walker, Fournier should see even more time on the court. While the Nets have played solid defense on the perimeter, Fournier should see plenty of shooting opportunities. Making Fournier over 2.5 three pointers our official player prop.

Official Play: UNDER 216.5
Official Prop: Evan Fournier OVER 2.5 3’s

Brooklyn Nets vs New York Knicks Analysis from The GoldSheet

This NBA crosstown rivalry has gone Brooklyn’s way lately, with the Nets winning 7 of the past 9, but it’s the Knicks who have covered 6 of the last 7 for those of you with a true rooting interest. New York HC Tom Thibodeau made a semi-radical move in benching PG Kemba Walker (and dropping him completely out of the rotation behind Derrick Rose and Immanuel Quickley) in favor of Alec Burks this week (salary cap percussions aside). So, Walker is in the shop window, and Burks should be at least a temporary improvement (he’s coming off a 23-pt., 7-reb., 3 assist game against Atlanta). The Nets, who will be without G Joe Harris 4-6 weeks as his ankle problem will require surgery, are just 3-6-1 against the number as Barclays Center chalk this season, while the Knicks are 13-7 vs. the number this calendar year getting 4 pts. or more on the road. The under is 9-3 in last 12 in the series. Play the Under.
