Knicks vs Nets Analysis

The Big Apple is producing Big Losers right now in the NBA as both New York teams have combined for two wins in February. The Nets are coming off a shocking victory against Sacramento in the debut of Drummond and Seth Curry, and the Knicks are coming off an overtime loss to the Thunder with no Dort or SGA so this game is a tough one. It appears the Knicks are opening as a 5-point home favorite with a total of 217.5 so let’s see if we can make any sense of this game and find a winning play in this one.

NETS BREAK LOSING STREAK

I lost a bet on Monday as I thought the Kings would steamroll the Nets, handing them their 12th-straight loss, but the game was never in doubt as Sacramento decided making shots was optional, and so was guarding Seth Curry and Bruce Brown. It was a much needed win for the franchise, but Curry, Aldridge and Brown went a combined 26-41 for a 63% average from the field which means the rest of the team wasn’t very good.

I don’t know if this new group played with energy to get them the win or if it was a bit of luck as Sacramento was dreadful. I’m not looking at ATS or Totals trends with Brooklyn as this starting lineup has no history except for one game. I liked how Curry and Drummond played, and their opponent is in such disarray they might be able to have similar success.

KNICKS CRUMBLE AGAIN

The Knicks are 1-4 their last five games in 4th quarter spreads as they blew another game late to the Thunder and they’re now 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games. They have a random win against Golden State on the 10th, which is looking more bizarre by the day and that’s their only win this month. In fact, they’re 3-12 in the last 15 games, and outside of Randle they are getting no consistent contributions.

The Julius Randle situation is so strange as he was the talk of the town last year, now the crowd has turned on him, and despite his huge increase in stats he appears annoyed and mad during games at times.

Their rotation and minutes differ from night to night, and it’s hard to tell what the short term and long term plan is. They play their starters a ton of minutes signaling that they are going for wins, except they’re losing most nights, and they aren’t getting their young guys minus and experience as Toppin and Quickly have limited minutes. Add Cam Reddish now to the mix and the roster makes no sense, and the results are showing for it.

KNICKS vs NETS PREDICTION

There’s no team in the NBA I would give five points to with the Knicks right now. They fold late in the games, their offense is predictable and stagnant, and this Nets roster has to have a little motivation and energy after getting the win against Sacramento.

I don’t expect this to be a pretty game to watch, but I do expect the Nets to be able to score. The Knicks have given up 112 or more in seven straight games, and they’ve blown leads in two straight games in the fourth quarter. It’s too many points to lay with the Knicks, I’ll take the Nets and the points.

Knicks vs Nets Preview from GoldSheet

Brooklyn snapped its 11-game losing streak with a victory at home against Sacramento on Monday night, without the services of G Kyrie Irving, who will also be unavailable in this “road” game in Manhattan. Seth Curry filled the lead guard role well for the Nets in his first game since the Harden/Simmons trade, scoring 23 pts. on 10 of 18 FGs, with 7 rebs., and 5 assists. Also included in the trade for the Nets was Andre Drummond, who moved into the starting lineup that night as well, with 11 pts., 9 boards, 4 assists and a couple of steals, turning in a +23 plus/minus in his 24 minutes on the court.

New York is only 2-8 against the number in its last ten, a result of a slippage in the Knick defensive effectiveness that’s also forced them “over” the totals in eight of those ten (and this series has seen four-straight “over” results).

The Nets have won four-straight and eight of ten against New York, although the Nets have been generous favorites in most of those and has covered only one of the last eight facing the Knicks.
