Blue Jays vs Red Sox Analysis

The Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays wrap up a four game series at Rogers Centre on Thursday afternoon. The Red Sox will playing for a series split after prevailing 7-1 last night.

The Blue Jays have other plans and will looking for 3-1 series victory after winning the first two games. Following the matinee game, Boston travels to Baltimore for a weekend series while the Jays remain in Toronto for a series against the Houston Astros.

The Jays send dominant righty Alek Manoah to the mound, while the Sox turn to quasi-starter Garrett Whitlock. It’s getaway day for the Red Sox so first pitch is scheduled for 3:07 PM EST.

Sox Will Settle For Split

The Boston Red Sox still sit at 4th place in the American League East, but improved their record to 8-11 after grounding the Blue Jays with a 7-1 victory.

Veteran starting pitcher Michael Wacha had another rock solid outing, limiting the Jays to only one run on four hits and two walks across six innings. Four Red Sox relievers pitched in with three shutout innings to secure the victory.

Xander Bogaerts, Rafael Devers and J.D. Martinez each had multiple hits and an RBI, which was an encouraging sign from the heart of the order. Bogaerts actually went 4 for 4 with a walk, reaching base in every plate appearance.

Still, the Boston offense has struggled, especially by their standards. They rank below average in runs scored and only 26th in home runs. Reliever turned starter Garrett Whitlock will be looking for similar results to his first start of the season in his last outing against the Tampa Bay Rays.

He threw 4 shutout while striking out seven, a lone single being his only blemish.

Jays Perched & Ready To Win Another Series

The Toronto Blue Jays haven’t lost a series yet this season with a 4-0-1 record. The worst they can do is another split, but a win would go a long way.

Things started out on the right foot for the Jays yesterday as starting pitcher Ross Stripling threw five innings and only allowed one run. However, the bullpen let him down as three different relievers each gave up two runs.

Toronto ended using a total of six pen arms which could set them back with the quick turnaround for today’s game. Vladimir Guerrero drove in the only run on a sacrifice fly and no Blue Jay hitter did better than a lone single.

Sophomore starter Alek Manoah will get the nod, he has been as consistent as any starter in the league thus far. He owns a 3-0 record with 2.00 ERA and 1.00 WHIP and 18 strikeouts in exactly 18 innings of works. He has thrown exactly six innings in each of his three starts.

Blue Jays vs Red Sox Prediction

The money line is set at -160 for the Toronto Blue Jays and +140 for the Boston Red Sox with the total set at 8. Both Garrett Whitlock and Alek Manoah have been lights out so far this season.

It may be a short sample size but both staters have been nearly flawless against the opposing lineup. The Jays are only 1 for 18 with a lone single and 9 strikeouts against Whitlock. While Manoah has only allowed 5 hits in 30 at bats to current Boston hitters for a paltry .138 batting average.

Toronto has had some success with the long ball, but let’s face it neither team has reached their full potentials with the bats.

The theme of the season series has been one team doing all the scoring from game to game with the other registering a few runs if any. Whitlock can only be counted on to pitch a handful of innings and the Jays pen is going to be taxed after using six arms yesterday.

It’s also possible that positional playes could sit to be rested for their weekend series. Let’s keep it short & sweet and ride the dominant starters with a first five inning under 4 bet.

Prediction: Under 4.5 (first five innings) -140
