Boston Red Sox vs Toronto Blue Jays Analysis

The Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox begin a three game series from Fenway Park on Friday night. Both teams will be kicking off the second half of the regular season and they are separated by only two games in the American League Wild Card race.

Boston will send their current ace to the mound in Nathan Eovaldi, while the veteran righty Kevin Gausman toes the rubber for Toronto. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST/4:10 PST.

Gausman Got Red Sox Number

The Toronto Blue Jays begin their post-All Star portion of their schedule at Fenway Park on Friday night. They currently occupy the third and final Wild Card spot with a two game lead over the Boston Red Sox.

They improved to 50-43 after winning their third straight game 4-2 against the Kansas City Royals. Jose Berrios tossed 6.1 innings of two run baseball and designated hitter Alejandro Kirk hit his 11th homerun of the season.

The Jays offensive attack remains in the top five in OPS, wRC+, batting average and home runs. Kevin Gausman will gladly take his turn in the rotation against Boston every time out if possible.

He has faced them three times this season and he is 2-0 with only two runs, 15 hits and 2 walks allowed in 21 innings of work, simply dominant. No surprise, but the Red Sox hit .208 against Gausman with only three home runs in 158 at bats.

Eovaldi Opens Second Half

The Boston Red Sox open the second half of the regular season on the right foot at home against the Toronto Blue Jays. Their record dipped to 48-45 after getting smashed 13-2 in New York against the Yankees.

Red Sox Nation could get to the All-Star break fast enough after a brutal stretch where Boston lost 6 of their last 7 games against division rivals the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays.

Chris Sale broke his finger on a 106 mph come backer and the Sox were outscored 27-3 in their last two games against the evil empire. There is still reason for optimism in Boston as their lineup is still one of the best in the business.

Nathan Eovaldi gets the nod on Friday night, he currently sits at 4-2 with 3.34 ERA and 1.14 WHIP. He also has had success against the opposing lineup, with only three runs allowed across 11.2 innings in two starts.

Andy Lang MLB Picks

Boston Red Sox vs Toronto Blue Jays Prediction

This game is a pick’em with both teams money line set at -110 and a total of 8.5. We have a matchup of two very evenly matched teams with starters who should both thrive early on.

What really stands out is Gausman’s absolute dominance over the Red Sox bats. He’s thrown an average of exactly seven innings a game in his three starts against Boston and his outs recorded line is set at only 17.5.

However this is only his second start since returning from a two week IL stint and with this being the first start after the break managers could lean more heavily on their fresh bullpens.

Gausman has also held Boston to only two runs across those 21 innings and I can see the bats getting off to a sluggish start and the starters will take advantage. I’m rolling with the Red Sox team total under 2.5 runs in the first five innings in this one at -140 on DK.

Prediction: Boston Red Sox Team Total Under 2.5 F5 -140 DK (first five innings)
