New York Yankees vs Boston Red Sox Analysis

Sports greatest rivalry reconvenes as the Boston Red Sox begin a three game series in the Bronx against their division rivals the New York Yankees.

The Red Sox are coming off a brutal sweep at the hands of the Tampa Bay Rays, while the Yankees lost two of three to the lowly Cincinnati Reds. Nathan Eovaldi makes his return from the IL for Boston, while New York turns to the lanky lefty Jordan Montgomery. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM EST/4:10 PST.

Red Sox Need to Right the Ship

The Boston Red had an amazing run in late May and through June, but have fallen flat in July. They still haven’t won a series and were swept in a four game set against the Tampa Bay Rays in their last series.

They lost a close one 5-4 last night and wasted a six innings three run performance from Kutter Crawford. Rafael Devers hit his 20th homerun of the campaign.

The Sox offense is still a wagon that ranks 3rd in batting average, 7th in OPS and 5th in runs. Nathan Eovaldi gets the nod for the first time since June 8th due to a back injury. He was 4-2 with a 3.16 ERA prior to the injury.

Yankees Hope to Bury Boston

The New York Yankees are obviously in the driver’s seat in the American League East but have the opportunity to basically bury Boston this weekend. They lost two of three to the Cincinnati Reds in their last series, including a 7-6 10th inning loss last night.

Aaron Judge, Gleyber Torres and Matt Carpenter all hit home runs. Nestor Cortes was lights out with seven innings of one run baseball. The Bronx Bombers boast the #1 offense in runs scored, OPS, home runs and walks.

They will hand the ball to the towering southpaw Jordan Montgomery on Friday night. He is 3-2 with a 3.19 ERA on the season. Montgomery held the Red Sox to two runs in five innings in his last outing.

New York Yankees vs Boston Red Sox Prediction

The New York Yankees enter the game as -160 money line favorites, while the Boston Red Sox sit at +140 with a total of 8. This total seems very low for these two explosive lineups.

Eovaldi is only going to be able to pitch so long as he works himself back into form. He has also allowed an alarming 16 home runs in 68.1 innings, which doesn’t bode well against the Bronx Bombers. The Red Sox bullpen definitely isn’t a strength and the Yanks could exploit that late in the game.

The Red Sox sluggers should also be able to do damage on Montgomery. They hit lefties just as well as righties and they should be locked in after losing four straight. Let’s take the over 8 in this one with plenty of confidence.

Prediction: Over 8 Total Runs Scored
