Angels vs Guardians Analysis

The Cleveland Guardians finish a four-game set with the Los Angeles Angels Thursday afternoon in southern California. Cal Quantrill takes the mound against Reid Detmers, and the Halos hope to bring out the brooms for a series sweep.

No Way Jose!

Cleveland’s offense showed the best performance in six road games Wednesday night, touching up Halos’ pitchers for 11 hits and five runs.

Jose Ramirez came to life at the plate last night, as he sent two pitches deep and drove in all four of Cleveland’s runs. The third-baseman is off to a hot start in 2022 with a 1.151 OPS, six home runs and 25 RBI.

Starter Cal Quantrill comes into this game in good form with three starts going 16.0 innings, a 3.94 ERA and 1.19 WHIP. He’s given up 12 hits, seven earned runs and seven walks, and struck out six.

The Cleveland right-hander is not spectacular, but he is a solid major league pitcher. Quantrill was one of the key players involved in the trade with the Padres that sent Mike Clevinger to San Diego.

Hitters Are Heating Up For Angels

The Angels continue to play solid baseball at home this week with their fourth-straight win, 9-5. The first three hitters in the LA lineup – Ward, Ohtani and Trout – were on point, going a combined 8-for-12, with seven RBI and six runs scored.

The rest of the lineup chipped in with six more hits, and it looks like the offense is becoming more consistent.

Angels starter Reid Detmer has struggled in his first few starts. The hard-throwing southpaw has a 6.57 ERA in 12.1 innings of work, giving up 12 hits, striking out 12 and only walking four. He doesn’t have a lot of experience at the major league level, only throwing 33.0 innings in his short career.

The biggest weakness for the Halos is their bullpen, which is tied for the sixth-worst team ERA at 4.19 – and have given up 12 home runs, 2nd-worst in MLB behind Texas.

Most of their wins they’ve had a big enough lead where this hasn’t been a problem. I realize we’re just three weeks into the season and there’s a lot of baseball left to be played. However, it may be something to watch later in the season with closer games, if they don’t have the luxury of a big lead.

Angels vs Guardians Prediction

We saw signs of life for Cleveland’s offense last night from Ramirez and Miller. Going against an inexperienced pitcher in Detmers may be what the Guardians need to snap this six-game road losing streak.

The Gs have an edge in starting pitching, and Cleveland has had a lot of past success against the Angels before this week’s series. That’s why I like Cleveland at plus money on the moneyline.
