Angels vs Guardians Analysis

The Cleveland Guardians take on the Los Angeles Angels in the second of their four-game series, as right-hander Triston McKenzie goes against southpaw Patrick Sandoval. Cleveland will try to even up the series as the Halos took game 1 last night 3-0, behind a strong performance from Michael Lorenzon.

McKenzie Zipping Past Competition

Last night’s starter Shane Bieber had a solid outing, going 6.1 innings and giving up only three earned runs. The problem was that the Guardian lineup only managed four hits and no runs.

While the Cleveland bats started off the season hot, they’ve cooled down over the last four games versus the Angels and Yankees.

They’re still 8th-best in OPS at .729, but currently going through a short slump – which will happen for all players and teams over a 162-game season.

Starter Triston McKenzie is a talented young arm for Cleveland, and has put up solid numbers. The right-hander has a 2.38 ERA and a WHIP of 1.06 in 11.1 innings of work. He’s only given up six hits, six walks and zero home runs.

Trout and Ward Pointing Angels in Right Direction

The Angels had an up-and-down weekend series with the Orioles, but came through with a solid outing Monday night in the 3-0 win.

Orange County native Michael Lorenzon has settled into the starter’s role pretty well. He threw six shutout innings giving up three hits, four walks and striking out three.

Patrick Sandoval’s first two starts have been solid, giving up zero earned runs and seven hits in 8.0 combined innings, and striking out 11. Granted, it’s not a huge sample size, but he’s done his job well.

Taylor Ward powered the offense with two home runs, but didn’t get much help from the rest of the lineup. While their team stats on offense are excellent – 2nd-best OPS in baseball – the Angels tend to get runs in bunches, and either quite a few or not very many.

While we’re just over two weeks into the season, we have to remember the shortened spring training, and that it’ll take both hitters and pitchers a little more time to find their groove and get into regular season form.

Angels vs Guardians Prediction

The Halos are getting good pitching and inconsistent offense, while Cleveland is going through a mini-slump at the plate.

The starters should be able to get through the lineups at least twice in good shape before turning it over to the bullpens. That’s why I like the 1st 5 innings under the run total.

Prediction: 1st 5 innings Under Run Total
