Travelers Championship top 10 strokes gained

TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut

From Nick Borrman:

We have yet another Designated event following a major this week at the Travelers Championship, the last Designated event of the season before the final major next month, with the FedexCup Playoffs following just behind.

As expected, the field is elite with all the Top-8 players in the world teeing it up. Of the Top-20 eligible, only Sam Burns and Jordan Spieth have opted out while Will Zalatoris continues his recovery from back surgery.

The tournament is known for giving young rising stars their opportunities to shine including Morikawa, Hovland and Theegala in recent years. This year, the two players to watch in that category are Michael Thorbjornsen who finished T4 here last year and Ludvig Aberg from Texas Tech.

TPC River Highlands is another par-70, though much shorter at just over 6,800 yards which is the shortest the players face on TOUR this season.

It also features just two par 5s along with the standard four par 3s in contrast to last week’s three and five, respectively. The course will certainly play much easier than last week as most players will have wedge in their hand on many holes as they attack the average 5,000 sq. ft. greens.

Last week we saw the two longest hitters in the field finish 1-2 and while length will still be an advantage this week, don’t rule out the plodders as guys that can contend.

To give you an idea of what’s possible here, Jim Furyk holds the TOUR record low round shooting that memorable 58 back in 2016.

Thursday looks like it could be the only dry day of the tournament as thunderstorms are forecasted Friday thru Sunday and could certainly throw some wrenches into the tee time schedule. Pay attention to the draw and watch the weather forecast late on Wednesday before settling in on your wagers for the week.

Travelers Championship Predictions

While Wyndham Clark may be considered a longshot winner last week, even by oddsmakers at 75-1, anyone that has been following the TOUR this season is not surprised by it after he won just a month prior and has been one of the best SG Approach players on TOUR.

It will be hard for him to repeat his performance from last week, but once again, look for an elite ball striker to rise to the top by Sunday.

Travelers Championship Outright Winner

Russell Henley +4000 (Bet365 or BetMGM)

Over his last eight starts, Henley has missed the cut just once which came at the PGA Championship. In the other seven events, he has finished inside the Top-20 in all of them including a T4 at the Masters and a T16 last week at the US Open. He also has a win this season back in November at the World Wide Technology Championship.

Henley’s weakness is his length, but at just 6,800 yards this week, the lack of length will not hurt him as he should still have plenty of short irons and wedges in his hand with his approaches.

He has gained strokes on approach in each of his last eight starts. His real strength is his driving accuracy as he ranks 1st in that department while also ranking 9th in Proximity.

With the Travelers slotting in directly after the US Open, we generally see a weaker field but that is obviously not the case this year with Designated status.

That means many of the big names don’t play here often, if at all, while this is Henley’s fifth start with three Top-20 finishes including last year.

Leaderboard Finish

Viktor Hovland Top-10 +210 | Top-20 +105 (DraftKings)

For what it’s worth, I also like Hovland as an Outright play this week, but since I gave him out in that fashion last week, I’ll move him to a Leaderboard selection at the Travelers.

With this being the final Designated event of the season, only six players competed in all three majors and every Designated event.

Of those, only one player cashed in every one of them and that is Viktor Hovland. He also hasn’t missed a payday since the Scottish Open last July, a run of 21 straight cuts made.

Hovland has the rare combination of distance and accuracy with the driver which has him ranked 6th in SG Off the Tee this season. He also ranks 17th in SG Approach, 6th in Proximity, 5th in Scoring Average and 10th in Birdie Average which the winner will need plenty of this week.

Finally, with emphasis back on Par-4 scoring this week as there are 12 in play compared to the standard ten, Hovland ranks 6th in Par-4 scoring this season.

Top-10 Player to Fade

Wyndham Clark

You have to expect a letdown for Clark this week after his first major championship win and nobody could blame him if he got off to a slow start and mailed it in.

He has had an incredible season and especially six-week ride as he also won the Wells Fargo Championship, but there is no way I want to bet on him this week even at his still attractive price of 50-1.

After he won his first TOUR event at the Wells Fargo in early May, he missed the cut in his next start at the PGA Championship. Wouldn’t be surprised at all to see the same here.

See you next week for the Rocket Mortgage Classic!
