Rocket Classic Course: Why Detroit Golf Club Matters for Bettors
The 2026 Rocket Classic returns to Detroit Golf Club, where the tournament will be played on a restored Donald Ross design that now plays as a par 70 measuring 7,328 yards.
Course changes ahead of the 2026 event have added length and altered strategy, placing a greater emphasis on quality ball-striking while maintaining the classic Ross features of tree-lined fairways, subtle elevation changes, and challenging green complexes.
Detroit Golf Club has traditionally been one of the PGA Tour’s better scoring venues, but the updated setup should provide a sterner test.
Wide landing areas encourage players to be aggressive off the tee, but success still hinges on precise approach shots into small, undulating Bentgrass greens.
Donald Ross’s signature false fronts, run-off areas, and strategic bunkering place a premium on distance control and creativity around the greens, while several reachable scoring holes ensure birdie opportunities remain available.
Although the winning score is still expected to reach well into double digits under par, the redesigned layout should reward complete golfers more than ever before.
Players who combine length off the tee with elite iron play and a confident putter will have the best chance to contend. The balance between attackable holes and demanding approach shots makes Detroit Golf Club one of the most entertaining and strategic stops on the PGA Tour schedule.
Golfers to Avoid Betting at the Rocket Classic
Xander Schauffele is being priced as the second favorite this week, and I just don’t see the value. Over the last three months, he ranks 12th in the field in total strokes gained, which is solid but nowhere near the level you’d expect from someone with those odds.
Most of that production has come from his length off the tee, while both his approach play and putting have been below his usual standards. He’s also managed just one Top 10 finish in his last eight tournaments, making him an easy fade at his current price.
Jackson Koivun is coming off a breakthrough victory, but this feels like a classic sell-high spot. He was outstanding last week, but prior to that his approach play and putting had both been below average, making it difficult to trust that one performance as the new normal.
The betting market has quickly adjusted, leaving very little value on a young player who still has plenty to prove. I’ll let someone else chase last week’s result.
Patrick Cantlay continues to be priced like one of the elite players in the world, but the results haven’t justified it. He has just three Top 10 finishes this season, and nothing about his recent form suggests he should be viewed as a top-eight favorite in this field.
He also finished 32nd here last year, offering little evidence that this course brings out his best. At his current number, there are much better options on the board.
Rocket Classic: Best DraftKings DFS Picks for The Open
Chris Kirk ($6,900) has quietly become one of the most reliable course-history plays in the field. He’s made the cut here six straight years, with five finishes of 21st or better, including a runner-up finish last season.
His iron play has been excellent entering the week, while the putter has been holding him back. Fortunately, something about these greens clearly suits his eye, making him a tremendous value with both a high floor and top-20 upside.
Mackenzie Hughes ($7,100) continues to put together a steady run of golf, making the cut in four straight tournaments while posting finishes of 20th and 10th during that stretch.
The approach numbers have been disappointing, but he’s been able to overcome them thanks to an outstanding short game and one of the better putters in the field. If the irons show even a slight improvement, Hughes has another strong opportunity to outperform his salary.
Emiliano Grillo ($7,200) is playing some of his best golf of the season. He finished 7th last week, extending his streak to four consecutive tournaments with finishes of 26th or better.
The underlying numbers back it up as well, ranking 7th in the field in total strokes gained over the last 30 days. With his ball-striking trending in the right direction and confidence building each week, Grillo stands out as one of the strongest values on the DraftKings board.
