Pebble Beach Pro-Am: The Playing Field

Another event involving multiple courses, and amatuers playing with the pros. When I say amateurs, I mean rich VP’s of companies and a couple celebrities.

Nothing says growing the game like watching the Director of Operations of GEIKO play along side Brendon Todd.

They’ll play two rounds, one at each course, and mercifully throw the amateurs out for the weekend so the 80 golfers can duke it out. It’s an elevated event with a big purse so expect the bigger names to actually care about this tournament.

The Weather

This week could be difficult for players as the temperatures won’t get into the 60s and  there will be some showers at points on Thursday, Friday and Sunday.

Pebble Beach Pro-Am Course: Torrey Pines Golf Club

Spyglass is a pretty short course with five Par 4s around 410 yards or shorter, and four Par 5s. There are a few water hazards, and in normal conditions the guys would be able to go low on this course, but the weather doesn’t look ideal so expect the average score to be around -2.

Pebble Beach is a beautiful course that is scorable, but the weather makes it an unknown this week as to what we’ll see.

The fairways are wide, and the course is short so we’ve seen low scores in years past and even though it looks to be a bit wet, the wind doesn’t look like it will be a factor til Sunday, but even then it looks to be later in the day.

I would expect an average score of -2 this week with the potential of -4 for the leaders if the weather cooperates.

Pebble Beach Pro-Am: Players That Can Trip You Up

Justin Rose – He’s the defending Champion here, but he finished 56th last week and 57th the tournament before that along with a 40th at a small field at The Sentry. The last three months he’s -0.43 tee to green, and while his putting has been good, it hasn’t been enough to save his finishes. He won last year, but was 62nd the year before that so I don’t expect a repeat performance from the defending Champ.

Scottie Scheffler – He’s finished 5th and 17th this season, and that’s just not good enough when you’re the betting favorite.

It’s strange that he’s never played here, but I think it’s a real disadvantage to not know these greens as good as the other guys, and while his tee to green numbers are all-time good, these courses are short and the fairways are wide so I think it limits his advantage. I won’t be betting on him this week.

Pebble Beach Pro-Am: DraftKings Darlings

Kevin Yu $7200

Really surprised to see him at this price this week, but I’ll gladly start my lineup with him. He’s finished 6th and 3rd the last two weeks, and he finished 7th here last year.

Beau Hossler $7800

He was 6th last week, and he’s been really good here finishing 11th and 3rd the last two years here. His putting the last three months is +1.33, and if he putts even close to that this week he’ll have a strong finish.

JT Poston $7900

I’ll go back to my guy Poston who took last week off, but finished 11th, 6th and 5th the three previous weeks. He hasn’t played here in a while, but over the last 6 months he’s 9th best in this field in total strokes gained. Better than Cantlay, Fleetwood and Spieth.

Full Lineup: Kevin Yu $7200, Beau Hossler $7800, JT Poston $7900, Nicolai Hojgaard $8100, Max Homa $9200, Patrick Cantlay $9700
