Farmers Insurance Open Course: The Playing Field

It’s a good field this week, and this is one tournament where losing a bunch of golfers to LIV hurts as this could be a great field, but we still have a lot of big names.

Defending Champ Max Homa along with Schauffele, Cantlay, Morikawa and Im round out the top 5 favorites, but there is a dropoff once you get outisde the top 25.

It was nice to see Daniel Berger and Will Zalitoris have good performances last week, and they’ll both be in the tourney this week.

Farmers Insurance Open Course: Torrey Pines Golf Club

The players will play one round on the South Course, and one round on the North Course on Thursday and Friday, and then the cut will be established. They will play the South Course on Saturday and Sunday.
North Course

This course is pretty easy, and players will have to go low to make the cut. It’s a short Par 72, and the weather is going to almost perfect this week so I think players are going to need to go -3 or better on this course to make the cut, and the winner will have to go -6 or better. The greens are pretty easy to hit, there’s only 1 hole with water in play so look for low scores here.

South Course

This course has teeth to it as it’s long, and wayward shots will be penalized. There are 7 Par 4’s at 450+ yards, and all the Par 5’s are 550+ yards. The rough can be tricky to hit out of, and the texture of the greens makes putting difficult for players.

Course history means a lot at this tournament as you’ll see consistency with players performing good or not here. Long and accurate works well on all courses, but at this tournament it’s essential to have a solid finish

Farmers Insurance Open: Total Strokes Gained Last 6 Months

  2. Collin Morikawa +2.30

  6. Eric Cole +1.68
  7. Ludvid Aberg +1.54

  10. Sahith Theegala +1.20

Farmers Insurance Open: Players That Can Trip You Up

Xander Schauffele – Schauffele has has two great finishes to start 2024, but I’m not sure this is the course to have him as the highest priced golfer. He has played here every year since 2016, and he has one finish better than 13th.

He has finished 13th and 34th the last two years here, and although his stats are really good, he has to finish top 3 to return any value, and I don’t see it with his course history. I won’t have him in any head to heads, and I won’t use him in DFS this week.

Tony Finau – He has great history at this tournament as he has five top 10s in the last seven years, but I’m not liking what I’m seeing from him right now.

He was bad at The Sentry finishing 38th, and last week he was 25th and we cashed a nice bet fading him in a head to head matchup.

In the last 6 months, he’s -0.44 strokes gained putting, and if he putts anywhere close to that this week he won’t finish anywhere near the top 10, which is where he’s priced right now. He’ll be popular pick this week, but I’ll be staying away.

Eric Cole – This pains me to pick Cole as he has been a DFS superstar, and he’s always undervalued, but the books have him priced as a top 12 golfer this week so there’s no value on him sadly.

He’s not long off the tee, and not very accurate and this South Course will eat you up if you’re short and inaccurate. Putting has been his strong suit, but he missed the cut here last year, and there’s no way I’m willing to invest in him at this price.

He has solid finishes this year, but none in the Top 10, and that’s what he’ll need to finish here to return value and I just don’t think he’ll get close to top 10.

Farmers Insurance Open: DraftKings Darlings

Peter Malnati $6300

He hasn’t been good recently, but I just can’t ignore his history here. He has finished 10th, 25th and 20th here the last three years, and I just need him to make the cut to get us weekend points. At this price, I’ll trust in his course history to outperform his recent finishes.

Lanto Griffin $6800

Lanto is another guy who is priced low, but who plays good here. He’s finished 7th, 30th and 37th the last three years, and he’s made the cut the last two weeks. His driving and putting are good, but his approach shots have been his achilles. He loves this place, I’ll take him at this low price to make the cut.

Michael Kim $7300

Kim has made the cut here in 5 out of the last 6 times he’s played here, and he’s made the cut the last two weeks including a 6th place finish last week. His putting and approach have been great the last six months as he’s +0.56 putting and +0.44 approach and he’s made the cut in 6 straight tourney dating back to last season.

Final Lineup: Peter Malnati $6300, Lanto Griffin $6800, Michael Kim $7300, Jason Day $9500, Sunjae Im $9900, Collin Morikawa $10,200

Farmers Insurance Open: Additional Betting Notes

-Patrick Cantlay’s best finish here is 51st, but he hasn’t played here in 4 straight years -Christian Bezuidenhout has finished top 10 in 3 out of the last 4 tournaments he’s played in.
-Luke List won this tournament in 202, has finished 40th or better in 6 straight tournaments, and has made the cut in 9 straight tournaments.
-Will Zalatoris and Daniel Berger had solid finishes last week, and are both coming back from injuries.
-Jason Day and Sungjae Im are the only two golfers this week who have finished top 10 two years in a row.
