2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson: TPC Craig Ranch

There isn’t much to this course as it resembles a LIV Tour easy course as opposed to a tough PGA course so expect low scores. The Par 5’s are very gettable, and the course is pretty flat and open, and there really isn’t much defense that this course offers.

The winning scores have been -23, -25, and -26 and the only problematic issue this week will be the weather on Thursday morning.

It’s supposed to be rainy and windy, and the reasonable person would think the PGA would delay tee times, but they screw this up most of the time so be prepared for anything.

The rain will soften up the course, and make approaches to the green even more easy, and there is a chance of rain across the other days, but it’s a low percentage so as long as there isn’t lightning, they should ge good to go.

Accurate tee shots and good putting will most certainly get players near -20 and a shot to win on Sunday.

Three Favorite Holes

5th hole: 570 Yard Par 5

Players have to birdie the Par 5’s this week, but this is the one that could give them trouble if the teen shot isn’t great as there is a bit of trouble on the left and right. Players will go for it two most likely, but there is a lot of roll-off and a big bunker that will require up and downs for most players

14th Hole: 310 Yard Par 4

This is a drivable Par 4, but trouble looms with water on the left and bunkers long and right. The safe play is to try and put it in the fairway about 20-30 yards short of the green for an easy chip, but aggressive players will try and put it on the green off the tee.

18th Hole:

This closing hole is one of the easiest on tour and it sets up an exciting finish as players on Sunday who are within 1-2 shots of the lead will have birdie or eagle opportunity.

Drive the ball in the fairway while avoiding the bunkers on both sides of the fairway and players will have a reasonable approach to hit a wide green. Bunkers in the front should be no problem based on pin location so look for really aggressive play to finish Sunday.

2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson Field

It’s a pretty weak field as Tom Hoge has the best total strokes gained the last 3 months. Defending Champion Jason Day is playing along with two-time winner of this event KH Lee, and they’ll be joined by Will Zalatoris, Jordan Spieth, Si Woo Kim, Adam Scott and more.

This event is sponsored by a Korean company so expect the Korean golfers to play with a bit of extra motivation as all of them are playing this week.

Total Strokes Gained L3 Months (PGA Tour)

Tom Hoge 1.72
Peter Kuest 1.70 (2 Tournaments)
Si Woo Kim 1.64
Alex Noren 1.44
Jason Day 1.43
Maverick McNealy 1.36
Will Zalatoris 1.31
Adam Scott 1.27
Brice Garnett 1.25
Andrew Novak 1.02

2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson: Players That Can Trip You Up

Will Zalatoris

He has really good irons, but his putting is terrible the L3 months a -0.25, and on a course that requires a low score to compete for a win, I don’t like supporting guys who don’t putt lights out.

He’s much better suited on tough courses where his tee to green can shine, and he missed the cut here 2 years ago on this same course. He wasn’t great at The Masters and he missed the cut with his partner at The Zurich so I don’t like his form and with his price being so high, I won’t be investing in him.

Jordan Spieth

He has one finish better than 30th in his last 7 tournaments, and I have an announcement to make. Just because Spieth is from Texas doesn’t mean he automatically plays good in Texas.

It’s a bad theory, and I think people are going to bet on him because of the Texas ties and he’s probably the most recognizable name in the field.

He’s priced as a top player to win, but he’s 24th in the field in total strokes gained T2G the L3 months right behind Brice Garnett. I won’t be betting on him this week.

Jason Day

He won this tournament last year, but he doesn’t have any top 15 finishes the last 5 tournaments, and he’s priced as a Top 3 player. He’s outside the Top 20 in total strokes gained in the L3 months, and I can’t invest in him at this price.

It’s a tough field to predict, but this tournament could have a lot of unknowns on top of the leaderboard on Sunday.

His putting has been really good, but his overall game hasn’t been great and before his win last year he had finished 51st and MC at this tournament.

2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson: DraftKings Darlings

Brice Garnett $6800

Garnett hasn’t missed the cut the last 3 years here, and he’s finished 18th, MC, 35th, 1st in the last 4 tournaments. He has pretty solid numbers T2G and putting so I expect a solid finish from him to get us weekend points.

CT Pan $7300

Pan has made the cut in 5 straight tournaments, and he finished 4th here last year so that’s all I need for a guy who’s $7300. His T2G is good, and his short game is above average in this field so I feel good about him making the cut.

Andrew Novak $7400

Novak only has 1 missed cut this season, and he has 3 top 10 finishes as well. He’s played here the last 2 years and he’s made the cut in both those tournaments. His strokes gained approach are +0.68, and he has good distance off the tee which should help him on this course.

Rest Of Lineup: Tom Hoge $9100, Adam Scott $9600, Si Woo Kim $9800
