Northwestern vs Nebraska Betting Analysis

Nebraska take on Northwestern this weekend over in the Aer Lingus Classic in Dublin, Ireland, which represents only the conference’s second international matchup in Big Ten history.

Nebraska will be hoping to rebound off a disappointing 3-9 campaign last season along with Northwestern also, who posted the exact same record, with both teams unfortunately owning the Big Ten West’s longest active losing streak last year with six straight losses overall.

Nebraska own the bragging rights in head-to-head competition with nine wins compared to Northwestern’s six, but Northwestern have won three of the last five against the Cornhuskers in recent matchups.

Nebraska Looks For Repeat of Last Season

Last season’s 56-7 blowout victory over Northwestern in Lincoln, Nebraska marked, not only the Huskers highest points total and largest margin of victory in a Big Ten conference game, but also their largest margin of victory in any conference game in over 20 years as well, so head coach Scott Frost will no doubt be looking for more of the same in this one.

However, prior to last year’s victory, each of the last four meetings between the two sides were one-score games, with two going to OT, and eight of the last eleven being decided by one score as well.

Decent Start, Poor Finish For Wildcats

After splitting each of their opening six games to start the 2021 season, Northwestern fell off a proverbial cliff to finish out the year, dropping six straight games and scoring 14 or fewer points in seven of their last eight games as well.

Head coach Pat Fitzgerald will be hoping for a much improved season this year as he welcomes back his top three running backs from last season, but loses out on LB Chris Bergin on defense, a player who led the nation in overall tackles last season.

Northwestern vs Nebraska Prediction

Northwestern ranked 128th nationally last season on red zone offense along with 125th on overall scoring offense, so with Pat Fitzgerald losing his top receiver from last year on top, Northwestern could well struggle to put up points here.

Nebraska are returning five players on defense who started every game last year along with both Luke Reimer and captain Nick Henrich who both ranked top 50 nationally in overall tackles last season.

The Huskers allowed just 22.7 points per game last year, 36th nationally, and with the return of most of their core defensive unit, we expect them to limit Northwestern offensively in this one.

However, the Wildcats were top 50 in overall pass defense themselves last year, so we could well see a lower-scoring game taking place in Dublin this weekend between the Huskers and Wildcats.

Take the Under 50.5 points on Saturday in the Week 1 matchup between Nebraska and Northwestern in Ireland.

Prediction: Under 50.5 Points Scored -110
